Diamond weight – depending on cut
There is a common misconception that the better cut a diamond is, the larger it is. At the same time, the “ideal cut” is, first of all, ideal proportions. The stone with the largest diameter will be “flat”. Such a diamond can be considered “winning” only if the quality of the cut is not lower than Very Good. But all other things being equal, a larger diameter stone with a good or ideal cut will cost more. Otherwise, you should not buy round diamonds with a cut quality lower than Good. When producing high-quality jewelry, it is extremely important that small diamonds (melee) perfectly match each other in diameter. To calibrate such stones, gemologists use a special set of “sieves”, each “sieve” in which allows one to obtain a certain size of diamonds. Colenoir uses exclusively calibrated diamonds with specified quality characteristics in its products. Set of sieves for calibrating diamonds Small diamonds (Melee) are sold in packages (Parcels) from 5 to 1000 carats with the diameter of certain screenings. Next, the stones are calibrated by the buyer using sieves of the required diameter. Are you planning to buy diamond jewelry, but don’t know how to choose it? In order not to make a mistake when buying jewelry, you need to be able to read the characteristics of these brilliant stones. It is not difficult.
Selecting a Diamond by Characteristics
- Cut shape
- Cut quality
- Cleanliness
- Carat
- Color
It is the total assessment of these indicators that affects the final price.
Cut shape
The cut shape of the future diamond is selected by the jeweler based on the natural size and shape of the stone. The specialist’s task at this stage is to reduce the amount of “waste” and at the same time cut the stone in such a way as to maximize its beauty and brilliance. The most popular shapes are round, princess and radiant. They are suitable for stones of various sizes. Asscher and emerald are cuts that are more often used for large stones. Each shape requires a certain number of edges, which can vary depending on the size of the stone. For example, a traditional round diamond may have 17, 57, or 85 facets.
The most common round diamonds are KR-57. They are always valuable. We advise them to give preference when choosing diamonds.
Cut quality
According to the Russian scale for grading diamond cuts, there are 4 grades of cut quality. This parameter characterizes how accurately the cutting is performed. The degrees are designated by letters from A to G. In this case, A is the highest level of stone processing with maximum angular accuracy. It helps to best reveal the natural radiance of the diamond, which affects the cost – stones with an A cut are more expensive.
Cutting quality rating scale:
- A – higher;
- B – good;
- B – average;
- G – low.
It is believed that the optimal choice is diamonds with cut quality A and B.
Cleanliness
The most valuable stones are those with high purity, that is, those that have the maximum ability to transmit light and, accordingly, have greater radiance. It can be delayed by micro-inclusions of other elements, as well as various structural defects.
The international GIA purity rating scale has 11 levels: from FL-IF – an absolutely clean stone to I1-I3 – a stone with significant inclusions and defects.
In the Russian Federation, the assessment system is different. For stones weighing up to 0,29 carats, there are 9 levels of clarity. For larger ones (from 0,3 carats) – 12 levels. Moreover, 1 is the cleanest stone, and 12 (or 9 for small ones) is the one with the greatest number of defects.
Absolutely pure diamonds are rare. Most often, stones of level 3 and above go on sale. Visually, diamonds from clarity levels 3 to 7 are quite bright and shiny. They are the best choice for purchasing.
The parameter of diamond purity is described in detail in the article “What does the purity of a diamond mean.”
Carat
As we have already said, the weight of diamonds is measured in carats. In this case, all stones are divided by weight into:
- Small – up to 0,29 carats;
- Medium – up to 0,99 carats;
- Large – from 1 carat.
Pricing in the diamond world is not linear: one stone of 1 carat will cost more than two stones of 0,5 carats. If you want to save money, choose borderline options: for example, a 0,99 carat stone will be much cheaper than a 1 carat stone.
More details about carat content are described in the article “Diamond Weight in Carats”.
Color
Although we are accustomed to thinking that a diamond is a transparent and colorless stone, this is not entirely true. Most of them have a tint. The international classification provides levels from D to Z. In the Russian Federation, the classification is numerical: from 1 to 9. In this case, clarity 1 corresponds to completely colorless diamonds, and 9 to diamonds with a pronounced tint (yellowish or brown).
The higher the number, the lower the price. For example, a diamond with a clarity of 4-5 will cost 2-3 times less than a similar size with a clarity of 3-4. Stones of levels 3-5 are most often found on sale: visually they appear colorless.
Colored, so-called “fancy” diamonds are valued individually: their price can be significantly higher than colorless ones.

How to read the inscription on a diamond tag
Each certified diamond and jewelry with it must be accompanied by a passport. It contains an alphanumeric designation. For example, 3 KR-57 0,7 3/3 B.
- 3 – the number of stones in the decoration, here there are 3;
- KR – cut shape, round.
- 57 – number of faces of the stone;
- 0,7 – total weight of stones;
- 3/3 – color and clarity of diamonds;
- B – cut level.
