Glows in ultraviolet rays. The most common fluorescent colors are baby blues and shades from golden yellow to yellow. Selenite often exhibits zonal fluorescence in an hourglass pattern, which may not be noticeable under normal light. Morphology Gypsum forms thin and thick tabular transparent crystals, sometimes prismatic, lenticular, and needle-shaped.
Crystals may have a curved surface, bent or twisted. It is often found in the form of rosette-shaped accumulations of lens-shaped crystals, veins, nodules, massive layers and asbestos-like parallel-fibrous masses (selenite), in the form of granular masses (including a variety of alabaster). Origin Gypsum is the most common of the sulfate minerals. It is formed in marine and lacustrine salt-bearing basins, in caves, in fumaroles, weathering crusts and in zones of oxidation of sulfide deposits. Occurs when anhydrite hydrates.
Gypsum is found in association with calcite, aragonite, anhydrite, dolomite, sulfur, celestite, and halite. Application Gypsum is a fairly inexpensive mineral, which allows it to be used in a wide variety of areas of human activity. Today it is used in construction and architecture, the paper industry, in the production of cement, enamels, paints and glazes, in medicine and agriculture.
Separately, it is worth noting the use of gypsum as an ornamental stone; its varieties (alabaster, selenite, etc.) are used to create decorative sculptures, figurines, vases, and boxes. In addition, craftsmen use it to make building slabs, blocks, cornices and bas-reliefs.
Among collectors, beautiful “desert roses”, twin “swallowtail” crystals and star-shaped gypsum aggregates are prized. Medicinal properties
- accelerate the process of bone tissue fusion
- relieves a person from excess sweating
- manufacture medicines for the treatment of spinal tuberculosis
- improve the appearance of the skin, restoring youth and beauty to it
Since ancient times, amulets and talismans made of plaster have been used as a kind of “cure” for human pride, inflated conceit and arrogance. According to magicians, the mineral is able to tell its owner how best to act in a given situation. Gypsum helps to achieve material well-being and success in all endeavors.
Interesting Facts
Gypsum has been known to mankind since ancient times. Even during the Roman Empire, various decorative and household items were made from it.
In the old days, there was a Catholic custom to cover images of the Virgin Mary with plaster plates. These plates were called “Marienglas”. This is where the Russian name for transparent gypsum crystals comes from – “Maryino glass”.
