Tourmaline jewelry stone
Tourmalines are gemstones that stand out for their variety of colors and the amazing attractiveness of the existing varieties. The minerals are in the form of prismatic crystals. They are characterized by longitudinal shading and a rounded triangular section. Tourmalines have a fairly high hardness, 7-7,5 on the Mohs scale, and excellent shine. These qualities contribute to the widespread use of stones by jewelers. Minerals of bright, rich color and good purity, with a mass exceeding 10-15 carats, are extremely rare. Such tourmalines belong to the highest price category. Designers from leading jewelry companies regularly use them when creating their collections.
Tourmalines can have the following optical effects:
- The “cat’s eye” effect is due to the presence of thin channels filled with inclusions of a gas-liquid consistency. Found among green tourmalines;
- The presence of the “Alexandrite” effect, which is a change in color when the light source changes, depends on the presence of chromium impurities. You can observe the yellow-green color of tourmaline under sunlight and orange-red shades when artificial lighting is turned on.
Tourmalines are distinguished by a very complex chemical composition, due to the likelihood of replacing the atomic composition of the crystal lattice without disturbing its structural appearance. Gemological specialists have divided the tourmaline family into several groups differing in chemical composition:
- Sherls are ferrous minerals of black color;
- Dravites are magnesian tourmalines of brown, less often green or black color;
- Elbaites are stones containing sodium and lithium impurities, which give the crystals pink, yellow, green or polychrome shades. Most jewelry tourmalines belong to this group;
- Uvites are similar to dravites, in which there is a predominance of calcium over sodium. There are specimens of green, brown, black color;
- Liddicoatites are similar to elbaites. The only difference is that it contains more calcium rather than sodium. They belong to jewelry stones with zonal pink and green coloring in the form of stripes;
- Chromedaravites differ in color from dark green to black tones.
Participants in the precious stones market practically do not use the names of these groups. Note that the color and a number of other physical properties of tourmalines depend on the chemical composition of the minerals. The presence of iron or titanium ions is typical for blue, blue, green, yellow, orange, brown, brown crystals. The emerald green tone depends on the presence of chromium or iron ions. Pink and red minerals contain an admixture of manganese.
In the jewelry market, it is customary to use the classification of tourmalines according to the color palette:
- Rubellites are tourmalines that have a pink or red color. They are among the leaders in value growth in the jewelry market. The color range varies from light pink to deep pink, crimson, scarlet, violet and red tones. Rubellites of rich red shades belong to the highest price category. The cost of individual specimens can exceed $1000 per carat. This makes rubellites the second most expensive tourmaline variety, just behind the neon blue Paraiba tourmaline. An interesting fact is that high-quality pink rubellites are preferred by the Japanese, and red ones by the Chinese. Sustained high demand for rubellites in Asia, Europe and the USA annually increases their value. Rubellites are characterized by the presence of a large number of inclusions, which are gas-liquid veils. Specimens of high purity and free of inclusions are valued very highly.
- Indigolites are tourmalines of blue, greenish-blue, bluish-blue colors. They are a fairly rare type of mineral. Stones of deep blue color are valued at the highest prices. Indicolites are supplied from Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mozambique, and Nigeria. The price of the best stones can exceed a thousand dollars per 1 carat.
- Verdelites are a variety of tourmalines with dark green to light green, pastel “mint” colors. Verdelites tend to be of high purity and are the most popular variety.
- Chrome tourmalines are distinguished by a bright green or rich green color, depending on the presence of chromium impurities. Chrome tourmalines are brighter than verdelites and are valued several times higher. You can read more about chrome tourmalines in the Verdelites section
- Polychrome tourmalines belong to an interesting group, which is characterized by the simultaneous presence of several colors. The most popular are “watermelon” tourmalines, which have a pink center and green edges.
- Paraiba is the most expensive tourmaline. Read more on the stone page.
Refinement of tourmalines
Experts do not synthesize tourmalines. Various refining methods are used to improve the color quality of stones. Heat treatment is used to lighten dark green or blue-green tourmalines. When pink-red tourmalines are heated strongly, they become completely discolored. Because of this, the darkest stones undergo heat treatment at low temperatures. Temperature action removes the entire range of unnecessary pink-violet tones in Paraiba tourmalines, leaving beautiful blue and greenish-blue tones.
Irradiation technology is necessary to improve the color saturation of pink tourmalines. In addition, irradiation of colorless stones gives them a pink tint, while irradiation of light yellow tourmalines adds brightness to them. Experts use polymer crack filling technology to visually improve the clarity of stones. This technology is used to process Paraiba tourmalines after heat treatment, which have a significant number of cracks. Discoloration of channels in stones is carried out by acid etching. A diagnostic report from a laboratory is necessary when purchasing tourmalines, especially expensive Paraiba ones, since the fact of refining significantly affects the cost of the stones.
Deposits of natural tourmalines
Let us note the numerous deposits of tourmalines in the world. The bulk of quality stones for jewelers comes from Brazil. In addition, supplies are made from Mozambique, Madagascar, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Pakistan. Russian tourmalines are mined in the Urals.
Interesting facts about tourmaline stone
The first specimens of tourmalines came to European countries from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) at the beginning of the 18th century. Europeans owe their acquaintance with these amazing stones to Dutch sailors. Interestingly, sailors used tourmalines to clean smoking pipes. It turns out that when heated, the stones become electrified, and they attract ash, cleaning the tubes. The variety of colors of tourmalines has led to the fact that they are often confused with other minerals of similar colors. Pink-red tourmalines became popular in Europe and Russia in the middle of the 18th century. This was greatly facilitated by the wonderful jewelry and decorative items made by the jeweler Carl Faberge.
Jewelry decorated with tourmalines came into fashion back in the 18th century. These stones were repeatedly confused with other precious stones and were used to decorate the crowns of kings and emperors. Modern jewelry brands regularly release collections with tourmalines. But jewelry with these beautiful stones is practically never found in the windows of Russian jewelry stores. It’s all about the great rarity of jewelry tourmalines compared to amethysts, citrines or blue topaz. Almost all jewelry with tourmalines are exclusive. Various models of earrings and rings decorated with tourmalines are more often sold, but jewelry sets are rarely found on sale. All types of jewelry made by the famous brands Tiffany & Co, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chopard, Bulgari are extremely popular.
