In the high mountain temples, says Indian legend, there live sacred cows, from whose udders drops of milk fall to the ground. When the milk hardens, it turns into a milky-white stone – cacholong. The very name – cacholong – probably came from the Turkic words kahe – river and halong – stone, although, according to another version, it sounds similar to the Mongolian concept, translated meaning “beautiful stone”. At its core, cacholong is a semi-opal, a porcelain, opaque variety of milky opal, sometimes having greenish, greenish-blue or greenish-brown shades with all sorts of multi-colored inclusions and patterns. There are several types of cacholong.

  • opal: the milky white color is due to the abundance of micropores evenly distributed in the stone, causing the effect of light scattering;
  • opal-chalcedony: consists of opal and fine-grained chalcedony inclusions;
  • chalcedony: completely similar in properties to chalcedony.

Most often it is cut in the form of cabochons with a treated inner surface. Used for making beads and bracelets, as inserts in rings and earrings. Unusual, but at the same time calm and gentle, cacholong is perfect for wearing by women and girls of all ages.

The combination of cacholong with stones of bright colors is especially beautiful: malachite, turquoise, rhodonite.

It is mined in Russia, Central Asia, Armenia and Iceland.
