If you go out into the street in the evening, when the first stars light up, take a piece of the sky, pull it towards you, and even cut it off, you will definitely be left with a small, tiny piece in your hands – bright blue, like a reflection of the Universe, with many tiny suns in the depths – lapis lazuli.
Lapis lazuli. Translated from Arabic – heavenly stone.

Lapis lazuli. Translated from Arabic – heavenly stone. By many ancient civilizations (Egyptian, Sumerian) it was valued much higher than gold. Resembling the firmament strewn with stars in its appearance, it has always been considered the stone of priests. Jewelry made from lapis lazuli is found in the tombs of the kings of Ur (4 thousand years BC) and in the sarcophagi of the pharaohs (approximately 3 millennium BC). In Ancient China, the “golden star stone” was considered a symbol of power: the insignia of senior officials was made from it. Indian Brahmins (a priestly caste) carved magical spell formulas on lapis lazuli.
Years passed, humanity discovered more and more precious and ornamental stones, but the love for lapis lazuli did not go away. The stone looked especially advantageous in large items. Above the throne of the Persian king Khosrow II Paviz (6-7 century) there was a canopy made of lapis lazuli (another name for lapis lazuli), decorated with gold images of stars and planets.
The two central five-meter columns of the iconostasis of the main cathedral of the Russian Empire – St. Isaac’s Cathedral – in St. Petersburg are made of 1248 kg of violet-blue Badakhshan lapis lazuli (one of the most valuable varieties of lapis lazuli mined in Afghanistan).
The Lyon Hall of the Catherine Palace in Pushkino (formerly Tsarskoe Selo) is decorated with Transbaikal lapis lazuli with inserts of Badakhshan stone, acquired by the imperial house at the price of silver.
In the Florence Museum, visitors can see the “lapis lazuli miracle” – a vase carved from a single piece of mineral by the sculptor Buantalenti for the House of Medici.
Today, the highest quality lapis lazuli is mined in Badakhshan (Upper Amu Darya), Southern Baikal region, Argentina, Rwanda and South Africa, Chile.
