Onyx lighting – a chic solution for the interior
Onyx is an incredibly beautiful translucent stone, the texture of which amazes the imagination with its numerous shades and patterns. It is possible to reveal the natural beauty and uniqueness of natural onyx with the help of lighting. Its translucency in interiors is played up by designers who use onyx for panels, stained glass windows, as wall panels, and decorate fireplaces and columns with stone. An onyx panel illuminated by warm light will become the central accent of any interior and create a cozy atmosphere in it. Onyx inserts effectively complement reception areas, bar counters and furniture facades, and onyx countertops for bathrooms have never gone out of interior fashion. To create a unique composition in your interior, in the catalog of our website you can choose and buy natural onyx in slabs, which has mesmerizing beauty and natural appeal. Onyx has a very ancient history. Vessels and figures made from this stone were found by archaeologists in the territory of Ancient Egypt and Babylon; these finds date back to the 5th–4th millennia BC. There are also mentions of it in the Bible – the throne of King Solomon and the walls of his temple were decorated with onyx. Onyx was magical for many ancient peoples of the world; it was endowed with protective and healing properties. It is still successfully used as a material for the manufacture of various artistic products.
Characteristics of onyx
Onyx has two main varieties, which have external similarities in color and pattern structure, but are completely different in composition, price, extraction capabilities and scope. One of them belongs to the chalcedony group, is an ornamental stone, close to agate, and is used in jewelry. And on the market of natural decorative and finishing stones, “onyx” is a completely different stone, similar in composition to marble and travertine. This onyx is a sedimentary rock of sinter origin, in other words, the formation of the stone is directly related to thermal springs, in which processes of layer-by-layer deposition of calcium bicarbonate from carbon dioxide waters took place, and due to high temperatures, its crystallization occurred. One millimeter in hundreds of years! Another name for this stone is “marble onyx”; it is mined in large blocks, allowing the production of columns, flowerpots, figurines, sinks and bathtubs, as well as large-format slabs for various cladding in interiors. Often an onyx quarry is a small part of a quarry where travertine is mined.
Colors and shades of natural onyx
The colors of onyx are extremely varied; moreover, within one color there can be many shades: from brown to milky white and beige, from red and orange to pink, amber and gold, from gray and blue to light green. The color is affected by the presence of certain impurities: copper in combination with magnesium gives a dark green color, and together with iron – light shades of green; Iron oxides influence the formation of yellow-red and brown colors. The special orientation of the fibers and crystals of calcium carbonate determined the amazing property of onyx – the ability to transmit rays of light. The pattern of the stone, as a rule, depends on the cut and reflects the differently colored layered structure of the stone – striped, wavy or radial. Onyx is a natural stone, mineral, dense sedimentary rock, which is a chalcedony fibrous variety of quartz. Onyx has a layered structure of carbonates, agate and various impurities. Depending on the ratio of its constituent parts, the stone has a monochromatic or multi-colored surface, multi-colored layers and inclusions, and contrasting combinations of shades.
Characteristics of onyx
Basic physical and chemical characteristics of the stone:
- abrasion – no more than 1,7 g/cm²;
- strength is 100 MPa;
- density ranges from 2,5-1,8 1,7 g/cm²;
- hardness according to the Mohs scale – no more than 7;
- water absorption is up to 0,4%;
- porosity – from 0,4 to 0,9%.
In general, the physical and chemical characteristics of onyx are comparable to marble and granite.
Colors and types of stone:
Onyx has a very original color scheme. There are no monochrome stones in nature; the mineral has a variety of striped colors. The rhythmic series of textures forms ornaments and play.
The composition of onyx can be reflected in the formula SiO2 (silicon dioxide). The stone is a dense sedimentary rock, which is a fibrous variety of quartz with impurities. It is the presence of inclusions that contributes to the creation of unusual visual effects: contrasting combinations of shades, the presence of multi-colored layers, inclusions, multicolored or monochromatic surfaces.
A variety of onyx-sardonyx, combines brown and red stripes. There is also a stone with red and bright orange stripes or a combination of white and brown. The color scheme of aristocratic or Arabic onyx includes a combination of black and white stripes. Onyx-carnelian is colored with white and red stripes. A type of stone – chalcedony combines white and gray patterns. Green shades, from emerald to pale light green, are combined with marble onyx. The most common multi-colored onyx includes a combination of blue, cyan and pink. There is also a black stone in nature. Unlike agate, onyx patterns form parallel lines.
Onyx has a light transmittance that is unique for natural stone. This characteristic of a stone varies depending on the breed. You can find green onyx stones with a transparent structure or, conversely, minerals with partial light transmission and an opaque structure, for example, like black onyx.
Considering the variety of colors of onyx and its unique texture, it can be used in architecture and design of any style – from classic to modern. Cladding surfaces with natural stone creates a unique atmosphere of comfort and luxury, emphasizing even the most sophisticated ideas of the architect and designer.
Advantages and disadvantages of onyx surfaces and products.
Cladding surfaces and products made of onyx has a number of advantages:
- onyx has a low moisture absorption coefficient, which allows it to be used in bathrooms and kitchens
- onyx has unique aesthetic qualities, since onyx has a unique texture and light transmittance
- Since onyx is a natural material, it has the ability to positively influence the psycho-emotional state of a person, which is another factor in the use of products made from it in residential interiors.
- onyx is durable and strong
- onyx is environmentally friendly and ergonomic
Surface cladding and products made from onyx are practically eternal, safe, durable and functional, which allows them to withstand any mechanical and technical loads. After many years of use, when onyx surfaces or products lose their original glossy shine, they can easily be repolished.
In addition to the positive properties, cladding surfaces and products made of onyx have a number of minor disadvantages:
- relatively high price of the stone. Not every buyer can afford onyx, which in turn makes even a simple product unique;
- difficulty in transporting stone. Onyx is a natural material and is mined from quarries in different deposits in different countries.
- labor-intensive process of installing stone. Only highly skilled workers will be able to install onyx floors with minimal joints and at a single level.
Since onyx is a natural material, it requires care. Polished stone surfaces must be wiped, ground from time to time and treated with special protective solutions once or twice a year.
