Spinel gemstone

Spinel is considered to be a noble mineral with a rich palette of shades. Its chemical composition is close to rubies and sapphires. This colored stone is classified as a rare mineral. Because of this, high-quality samples are valued very highly, up to several thousand dollars per carat. Experts note a shortage of jewelry spinel supplies on the world market. The market value of stones is influenced by the color of the crystals, especially its saturation, as well as purity and origin. The cost of different color varieties varies greatly. There are practically no items decorated with noble spinel in jewelry store windows. The rarity of natural minerals forces craftsmen to make piece jewelry only to order. Specialists from many world-famous jewelry brands create exclusive jewelry with spinels of different colors, which are the highlight of their collections.

Main color varieties of spinel

  • Red spinel belongs to the highest price category. The presence of additional color shades (orange, purple or burgundy) reduces the price of red spinel. Read more about red spinel.
  • Pink spinel is also quite expensive. The best specimens of stones are exported from Burma (Myanmar) and Tanzania. The market value of stones of red and pink shades is constantly increasing. Read more about pink spinel.
  • Minerals that are blue or blue in color are among the rarest. In the jewelry market, it is customary to call such specimens “cobalt spinel”, since the color range is determined by the presence of cobalt admixture. Read more about blue and cyan spinel.
  • There are specimens of stones with purple and lavender colors. More saturated minerals look more attractive and are more expensive. They are characterized by the manifestation of dispersion, which has a beneficial effect on the beauty of the stone. Read more about purple spinel.

Spinel refining

Natural spinel is not refined due to the unique properties of these stones. However, methods for growing artificial crystals have been developed. Therefore, specimens of synthetic spinel are often found on sale, which are difficult to distinguish from real minerals of natural origin using standard diagnostic methods. When purchasing expensive spinel, you must ensure that you have an expert opinion issued by one of the independent gemological laboratories. The lack of refining makes spinel stand out from other precious stones.

Spinel deposits

History of spinel

Jewelers have been using spinel since time immemorial. Previously, its transparent red crystals were mistakenly classified as rubies. There are notes from the traveler Marco Polo that the pink spinel from Badakhshan is called “ruby bale”. Europeans called this mineral “balas”, naming it according to the ancient name of Badakhshan. The French transformed the name “balas rubies” into “balais rubies”, and from the beginning of the twentieth century they began to call these stones “balais spinel”.

Multi-colored spinel crystals have always been considered one of the most expensive precious stones. These minerals were used to decorate royal regalia, classifying spinel as a symbol of power. It is known that noble burgundy stones shine on the crowns of the emperors of the Russian and German empires, the kings of Great Britain and France. Spinel occupied a dominant place on the “Monomakh Cap”, which was used during the crowning of Russian princes. When making the crown for the Russian Empress Catherine II in the 398,72th century, a unique spinel crystal weighing 361 carats, taken from the “Monomakh’s Cap,” was installed at its top. Eastern rulers who possessed untold wealth loved to decorate their thrones with spinel. Interestingly, modern methods of diagnosing precious stones have revealed that several of the world’s most famous rubies are actually crystals of noble spinel. This applies to the jewelry of the British treasury “Ruby of Timur”, weighing 170 carats, and “Ruby of the Black Prince” weighing XNUMX carats.
