Zircon gemstone

  • Starlites are bright blue zircons from Cambodia.
  • Hyacinths are distinguished by their orange, brownish-red, golden-red color. These stones are highly valued by experts. The mass of hyacinths found on the jewelry market does not exceed 5 carats.
  • Jargons are characteristically straw-yellow in color and are extremely rare.
  • Zircons in green, lilac, pink and brown shades.
  • Colorless zircons – their brilliance and magnificent play are comparable to a diamond.
  • There are also specimens that have a rare color changing effect.

Jewelry zircon combines amazing optical effects:

  • Dispersion is the play of colored flashes in the stone. The dispersion index of zircon is very high, higher than that of diamond, which makes it extremely attractive for jewelry. Natural zircons exhibit stunning fire and shifting iridescent flashes, which is why colorless, transparent zircons are sometimes used as diamond substitutes.
  • Birefringence is the effect of bifurcation of the ribs; in zircons it is very strong and visible to the naked eye. In photographs, birefringence can cause the stone to appear out of focus. The effect of splitting the edges helps to accurately identify zircon from a number of other colored stones.
  • The cat’s eye effect is a very rare optical effect for zircons. It is characteristic of cabochon-cut stones with longitudinal inclusions, due to which a light strip is formed on the surface of the stone. It moves when the stone is rocked.

Transparent, colorless zircons are characterized by a high refractive index and strong dispersion. These stones, after high-quality cutting, are very similar to diamonds. They play amazingly and sparkle under the rays of light falling on their faces. The play of light is most evident in light crystals. Stones of darker shades play worse.

The gemological uniqueness of zircons lies in the significant scatter in density and refractive index, which goes beyond the results explained by differences in the chemical composition or the presence of voids in the structure of the crystals.

Cost of natural zircon stone

Experts consider zircon one of the most undervalued gems on the market and predict an increase in value. Precious zircon has yet to reach its maximum market potential, we believe that this is only a few years away. We are already seeing an increase in demand for this stone not only among collectors, but also among famous jewelry houses that produce limited-edition items and collections with this beautiful gemstone. Jewelry with zircons from the German company Hemmerle is famous throughout the world.

The cost of zircons of different color varieties differs, but the main pricing factors are: the weight of the stone, clarity, cut, and most importantly, the degree of color saturation. The most expensive variety is blue Cambodian zircons. Large, rich blue, almost blue samples in high-quality cutting can cost $280-450 per carat. Lighter colors cost in the range of $150-280 per carat. Yellow, red, brown and colorless zircons cost an average of $100-200 per carat.

Jewelry zircon deposits

Jewelry zircons are mined in only a few deposits. The best minerals come from Cambodia and Sri Lanka. Stones from these countries have the most diverse color palette, including specimens in reddish brown, yellow and green. It is curious that all starlits come to the market exclusively from Cambodia. Most stones acquire a colorless color after being refined by heat treatment. Along with this, small quantities of natural colorless zircons are mined in an area called Matara in the south of Sri Lanka. Good quality stones are mined from deposits in Burma, Thailand, Tanzania, Madagascar and Vietnam.

Note that blue, golden-yellow zircons and colorless crystals, which are now at the peak of popularity, are refined reddish-brown minerals from Cambodia. Interestingly, the results of heat treatment of crystals are characterized by good stability.

Refinement of natural zircons

The mined zircon raw material has a brown, less often orange, color. It acquires a blue color after annealing in special furnaces. Also, the color of zircons after heating changes to colorless, yellow or orange. 90% of zircons are heat treated. Heat treatment of zircons is considered generally accepted by the gemological community and does not affect their value; the situation is similar with tanzanites. Heating occurs in homemade barrel ovens, where a fireproof container with raw materials is placed. The container protects the crystals from direct fire, preventing cracking of the raw material. The process takes only a few hours. Sometimes, to correct the color of crystals, heating occurs in two stages. The color change resulting from annealing is stable.

Common Misconceptions About Zircons

Due to the similarity in name, the rare natural zircon stone is often confused with cubic zirconium (cubic zirconia), a cheap synthetic stone that is used as an imitation diamond. This is not the only confusion in names that arises among buyers. Jewelry zircon is also confused with a similar-sounding metal, zirconium; in the periodic table it is designated as Zr.

  • Zircon (ZrSiO4) is a precious natural stone.
  • Cubic Zirconia – cubic zirconia, a synthetic imitation of diamond.
  • Zirconium (Zr) is a metal from the periodic table.

Jewelry with zircons from the German companies Hemmerle and other lesser-known brands are famous throughout the world. Jewelry house designers produce exclusively exclusive products.

Yes, the photo of the entire product is true. In some cases, products may be a shade brighter or vice versa – this is due to the settings of your computer (monitor), phone, tablet and the color scheme may be slightly distorted.

If the material in the product description is imitation, it means that these are not natural stones (artificial or synthetic).
Tinted beads are colored ones.
Natural stone is pressed and then painted.
Some stones in nature have a rather pale tint, and to make the beads brighter and more interesting, the rock can be tinted using various techniques (heating, adding salts, dyes, etc.)

The number of beads on the thread depends on the size of the beads. The larger the beads, the fewer there are on the thread.

Most threads are 38-40cm long, the price is for a full thread.

You can determine the diameter of the beads using a caliper. The error for beads is considered normal from 0.1mm, but not more than 0.3mm.

We understand the desire of customers to be sure that they are purchasing a real mineral and not a fake and often ask us about certificates. According to the law, ornamental and semi-precious minerals are not subject to mandatory certification.

Having studied the market, we came to the conclusion that the most profitable thing for us and our clients would be to purchase a full thread; as a rule, the markup for a whole thread is minimal. In the case of half thread or beads individually, the markup increases by 30-40%.

The main part of our fittings is made of brass alloy, which is plated with rhodium and gold. It does not darken (subject to certain conditions), and also does not cause allergies.

Rhodium is an expensive platinum group metal. The color of rhodium is light silver. Products are rhodium plated in order to improve their presentation and protect them from scratches, but even this coating has a shelf life; even natural silver has wear and tear over time. In addition to silver, rhodium plating can be black. The big advantage of rhodium-plated fittings is that they do not cause allergies.
