Lava. Born in the depths, the red-hot blood of the earth. Pouring out from the crater of a volcano, it flows across the surface of the earth, burning out everything in its path, not even leaving a chance for life. The only thing that is born in lava is the amazing stone obsidian – the frozen tears of the planet itself. Black or gray, slightly bluish, sometimes with iridescent streaks.
Black or gray, slightly bluish, sometimes with rainbow stains or with small snowflakes frozen inside forever. All this is obsidian – volcanic glass.
Obsidian is one of the oldest materials used by man. Almost 9 thousand years ago, while warming up by a fire, man learned to make the first knives, spearheads and arrowheads from it. The ancient Egyptians and Babylonians knew it, and in Ancient Greece its description was included in the famous “Treatise on Stones.” The greatness of Jericho rested on the trade of this stone – everyone wanted to buy obsidian.
The ancient Romans had a special love for obsidian. It was a popular material for making mirrors and various jewelry, and was used to determine the authenticity of precious stones. Emperor Augustus (63 BC-14 AD) ordered four elephants to be carved from obsidian to decorate one of the main temples in Heliopolis. The value of obsidian in the ancient world is evidenced by the fact that it was often and readily counterfeited by fraudsters, from ancient times (an “obsidian” glass bead, dated around the fifth millennium BC, found during excavations near Nineveh) to the present day : Recently in England there was a hearing on a case of counterfeiting: rounded pieces of green bottle glass were passed off as natural stone.
Obsidian is found on all continents. The richest deposits are located in the USA, Mexico and highland South America, Germany, Turkey and Spain, Armenia and Russia. Anyone can buy obsidian from us.

Additionally | obsidian may include small air bubbles that form textures parallel to the direction of lava flow. These bubbles can produce interesting effects such as: · a golden glow (glittering obsidian), · a silvery glow (silver obsidian), · a rainbow multi-colored glow (rainbow obsidian). Occasionally, obsidians are found with iridescence in bluish-blue, green and reddish tones, sometimes combined iridescently in one piece. · Inclusions of small, white, radially fused cristabolite crystals in black glass create the effect of snow flakes (snow obsidian). |
