Tips for stone care

How to check a stone for originality?

Specialists and students of the “Yes, I can!” jewelry school We work only with genuine precious materials. But how can a non-professional determine whether the gold in front of him is real and distinguish precious stones from fakes? There are several ways to check authenticity, which we will discuss in detail in this article.

Methods for checking jewelry

Most often, checking the authenticity of materials is relevant before purchasing jewelry. Therefore, first we will consider the simplest assessment methods.

1. Buying from a famous brand jewelry store

By purchasing jewelry from a well-known brand, you guarantee the absolute authenticity of the stones and metals. Popular brands are at great risk to their reputation, so none of them will sell counterfeits.

2. Independent visual inspection

  • manufacturer’s name and trademark
  • article and product name
  • metal sample and its designation
  • manufacturer’s legal address
  • description of precious or semi-precious stones inlaid into jewelry
  • total weight of the product
  • the cost.

Also on the reverse side of the tag there must be a stamp of the Technical Control Department. When selling counterfeits, sellers often offer a certificate of conformity instead of an official tag, but such papers do not have legal force and do not confirm the quality of the product.

Please note that a certificate is provided additionally for precious stones. Remember that every piece of jewelry that goes into retail is given a special mark – the manufacturer’s imprint.

Also pay attention to the quality of the jewelry itself – the stones must be inlaid and fixed in the frame, and not just glued, the chain links must be soldered and without gaps.

3. Metal sample detection

Any product made of gold or silver must be tested. It is easy to determine the metal alloy and confirm authenticity. You can read more about gold samples here.

Silver of low and medium quality is designated 750, 800 and 875 samples. For high quality silver jewelry, 925 is standard. 960 and 999 fine alloys are used in bank coins and bullion.

Platinum also has several official hallmarks confirming its quality – 850, 900, 950, 999.

Also, in addition to the sample, the product must have a quality mark. For gold, this is a girl in a kokoshnik or a five-pointed star (used until 1994).

4. Examination and opinion of an independent expert

If you have already purchased jewelry, doubt the authenticity of the materials and question previous methods, then it is best to have the product checked by a specialist. The opinion of an independent expert will be the only and most reliable way to verify the authenticity of the jewelry.

The examination is carried out by professional gemologists using specialized tools, solutions and methods, such as spectral analysis. Experts will evaluate the quality of the product and see whether the gems inlaid into the jewelry are genuine, then they will evaluate the cost of the product and make their conclusion. With this document, you can return the fake to the seller or present evidence in court.

«People’s» methods

Using a sample and a tag, you can determine the authenticity of stones and metal. But if you still want to more accurately determine whether the jewelry in front of you is fake or original, you need to arm yourself with the means at hand:

Often, gold-plated steel or other alloys with a high iron content are passed off as full-fledged gold jewelry. These products have a high content of precious metal, so they will not be magnetic in any way.

Silver jewelry can be rubbed with regular chalk. You can tell that this is real silver if the chalk begins to darken.

Platinum is often replaced with silver. A fake made of silver reveals itself by its plasticity and black tint, which a platinum alloy will not have. You can also use ammonia to test platinum, which causes a blackening of the surface of most metals except platinum.

Gold alloys are tested with regular iodine. On a counterfeit or an alloy with a high content of impurities, a stain will remain after interaction with iodine. In the case of platinum, on the contrary, the darker and more saturated this stain remains, the higher the fineness of the product.

Pour some vinegar into a glass and hold the suspected decoration in it for about 5 minutes. There will be nothing wrong with genuine gold, but fake gold will immediately darken.

The authenticity of gemstones can also be easily determined:

  • Breathe on the gemstone; if it is real, it will not fog up.
  • Try the pearls “by tooth.” A genuine mineral will grit on your teeth like sand.
  • Place the amber in a glass of salted water. The real one will float up immediately, since its weight is less than the weight of salt water. Amber can also be rubbed with a wool cloth; it becomes electrified, will attract dust and give a slight electric shock.

Get, but check

Thus, using these methods, you can quickly determine the authenticity of a product without resorting to the help of an expert. However, if suspicions still remain or these methods do not help, then it is better to conduct a jewelry examination and see the full picture.

We hope you now know how to avoid counterfeits when buying jewelry. Buy only genuine products made of precious metals and stones or create them yourself at the “Yes, I can!” jewelry school.

Unfortunately, today very often in jewelry stores, under the guise of real precious stones, you can buy ordinary glass for crazy money. At the same time, jewelry store sellers may not even be aware of the counterfeit – very often scams are “performed” at a much higher level.

Precious stones – selection instructions

Of course, when buying jewelry from famous workshops, you want to believe in its authenticity. However, a little checking never hurts. So, of course, the surest way to check whether the jewelry you purchased is real gemstones is to seek help from professionals. Gemmoloic examination will detect a fake, even if it is perfectly disguised.

On the other hand, examination – an expensive procedure that takes both time and money. Is there any alternative? Is it possible to conduct a similar examination at home? Of course! To do this, you first need to familiarize yourself with what features certain precious stones have. This knowledge will help you avoid buying jewelry with fake jewelry. When buying jewelry, carefully look at the structure of the stones, their color, and shape.

Jewelry with emeralds.

When choosing jewelry with emeralds, first of all, you need to pay attention to the condition of the surface of the stone. Emeralds have a unique structure in which a specific pattern is visible – growth lines that are noticeable under a magnifying glass. Defects and cracks are very common in natural emeralds. Keep in mind that spiral or tubular inclusions in the structure of the stone most likely indicate its synthetic origin. When choosing emeralds, it is important to touch them – like most natural gemstones, they have a cool feel.

The peculiarity of emeralds is that, that they can be confused not only with their own doubles, but also with other precious stones, such as beryl, peridot, tourmaline. That is why, in order to get a 100% accurate conclusion regarding the authenticity of an emerald, you need to contact a specialist.

Jewelry with rubies.

If you see a scarlet stone at a low price, do not be deceived. There is very little chance that this is a real ruby. The second aspect of choice is size. In nature, rubies usually grow to small sizes; large specimens are much less common and cost accordingly. Like all other real gems, rubies are not perfect. Do not give up on a stone that has visible defects inside; on the contrary, inclusions and microcracks indicate naturalness. Small bubbles can also be found inside rubies, the color of which completely matches the color of the stone.

Among the main characteristics of ruby are the following:

– high strength – if you scratch a stone with a lower hardness with a ruby, you can get noticeable signs of damage;
– the color of a real ruby appears deep red on one side and soft pink on the other;
– under ultraviolet light, fake gems take on an orange tint;
– placing a ruby in a glass container, you can see bright red radiation.

Jewelry with sapphires.

According to statistics, sapphires are most often counterfeited. That is why, when buying jewelry with sapphire, you need to be especially careful. Real sapphire is transparent. It has a bright and rich blue color. Like any other natural stone, sapphire has small defects and cracks on its surface. To check whether the gem in front of you is real, you can run another stone across its surface. There will not be a scratch left on the original stone. Sapphires – very cold stones; by this characteristic they can also be distinguished from fakes.

Keep in mind, even if you choose jewelry with natural sapphire, if there are too many cracks in it, the stone will soon lose its shine. Moreover, under the influence of high temperatures it can even crumble.

How to test gemstones for strength.

Other frequently counterfeited stones: topazes, amber, amethyst, pearls. In all cases, it is very easy to identify a fake.

– Topaz cannot be perfectly clean.
– Amber is tested with a piece of woolen fabric – after contact with it, the stone becomes electrified and attracts dust particles.
– Fake pearls are usually hidden behind a very affordable price. In addition, you can try the gem on your teeth – a real stone should squeak slightly.
– Any natural amethyst must have internal defects and inclusions.
