Rare and valuable minerals

How to distinguish jade from soapstone?

While I was telling you about various new products and technologies, life went on as usual. I came across a curiosity at a well-known Chinese site – a carved pendant with a dragon made of an unknown stone. The autotranslator was intrigued – the Liantian stone. Well, I guess that’s what it is? What kind of stone? I ordered it, of course, but when I found out what and how, it was already too late. Well, okay – firstly, let’s take it in order, and secondly, a carved dragon is never superfluous. I’ll tell you about my adventures. The “Lianthian stone” turned out to be jade – after a fair amount of digging on the Internet, we managed to find out. I already have jade in my carved collection, and also, by the way, a dragon. But that’s not the point. The real name of the “Liantian stone” is Lantian jade. Lantian is a special jade from the Chinese county of the same name, and it is distinguished by a special yellow tint. Sometimes it comes with green splashes, and sometimes even with a blurry pattern reminiscent of clouds. Lantian is the most interesting jade in terms of color. Its color varies from waxy to rich honey yellow. Equally, the inclusions in it are almost white and apple-green. Lantian jade has a very interesting property – pleochroism (for those who have forgotten – this is the property of changing color depending on the angle of incidence of the rays). This is the only type of jade that has this property. In some ways this is special material. This is where I started thinking. What’s the catch? The pendant I bought does not seem to be a lantian. To begin with, it’s not yellow at all. Well, a little lighter than the pendant I already have. White with a greenish tint – but not yellow. This jade may have been mined in Lantian, but it is clearly not the famous yellow jade. It’s a pity of course. But the carving is still beautiful, which is a comfort. I think it’s more likely a variety. Let’s talk about the varieties in order. So here it is. In general, in China there are 4 varieties of jade – just yellow lantian, then there is also white-gray hotan (aka “mutton fat” – it is the most valuable for them), there is also white or pale green xiuyan – it is translucent, rarely even transparent, and it is possible that my pendant is from this variety. And the fourth variety is Nanyang, a very common greenish, yellowish or gray-white variety with inclusions of green, yellow or pink – this is my first pendant. Well, xuyan so xuyan. But all is not lost yet, right? Maybe lantian is not jade at all? You never know what they write on foreign websites. And then I came across information that jade from China is sometimes not really jade. How so? Yes, like this – since ancient times, carvers have classified various stones as jade, which simply look like jade. For example, jadeite, some jaspers, soapstone (soapstone), almatolite (soapstone) and some types of marble. Moreover, such “jades” are called a little differently in Chinese – yu. So what am I getting at? Lantian Yu – it may not be yellow jade, as I first thought, but white marble with a green tint. So, it turns out that it is quite likely that I don’t have a doubled mineral in my collection after all! Yeah! We need to dig again! Okay, I’ll dig further. How to check – is it jade or something else? Just. Jade has a hardness of 7, and marble has a hardness of 2,5-4. In theory, it can be scratched with scissors. Scratched? No. Not even a trace remains. What if almatolite is also similar? No, that one is also soft. So, it’s jade. What they left is what they returned to. Well, from now on it’s science – study the issue before ordering something. So far I have settled on the fact that I still have a double stone, and it really is jade. But it was fun to put into practice the knowledge gained in geology courses! But in life, the main thing is not collections, but fun. But the pendant is still beautiful. PS Knowledgeable people confirmed just yesterday that this is indeed a xiuyan. Beautiful white Xiuyan jade. Jade is one of the most mysterious minerals on Earth. It is difficult to break, so many ordinary people consider it a space stone. In addition to the strength itself, it has a unique appearance: jade can be striped or spotted. Most often in nature, light stones are found: yellowish, with a green tint, but there are also ones similar to emerald. Black jade is considered the rarest and most unique. According to historical notes, black jade began to be mined in China, believing that it was fragments of a once fallen meteorite. Contrary to the stories, this is an ordinary earthly rock that has changed color due to strong soil pressure and special weather conditions, but how many rumors has it given rise to? Today this breed defends the interests of medicine, design and jewelry. Basic properties of jade Scientists continue to study this breed, considering it amazing and incredible. Already today, the stone is used in saunas, massage treatments, to create jewelry and decorative items, in the production of furniture, and in the design of gardens, parks and houses. The mechanical strength of the material allows it to be used to make the most durable products that serve their owners for decades. In esoteric culture, the stone is considered unusually strong; it saves from many diseases, resurrects the aura, and restores vitality. This is true, however, all procedures will be discussed later in the article from a purely scientific point of view. Applications of jade stone For medicinal purposes, jade is used for body massage and in saunas or baths. Research claims that carrying a stone with you also helps with various diseases; it has been found that the stone increases life expectancy and significantly improves its quality. Stone treatment or stone therapy is the effect on human skin using heated stones or mineral massagers. Small jade products allow you to massage yourself at home with great health benefits. The cost of real jade cannot be called low, but its strength and long service life completely pay for it. The stone should be used for the following purposes:

  1. Improved blood circulation. Jade itself has the property of increasing blood circulation. Combined with massage movements, the effect is enhanced; the desired result can be achieved in a shorter time.
  2. Skin regeneration. The process can be called a direct consequence of the previous paragraph. Thanks to the blood flow to the capillaries, the epidermis and other layers of the skin receive more nutrients. The complexion improves, wounds heal faster, and old scratch marks disappear.
  3. Relieving the feeling of constant fatigue. With stress at work and at home, under conditions of constant workload and tension, fatigue accumulates unnoticed, after which it leads to apathy and depression. A five-minute massage with a jade stone will help relieve daytime stress and improve the quality of your sleep.
  4. Headaches, frequent migraines. There are many reasons for these problems and they are different for everyone, but jade helps with them all. The massage should be concentrated around the eyeballs, occipital and temporal parts of the head. The impact on the cervical region and the area behind the ears also brings tangible results.

The use of jade in baths and saunas

Many stones are recommended for use in steam rooms, but the emphasis is on jade and jadeite. There are a lot of factors in favor of the first one:

  1. Strength. The service life of the mineral is unlimited even with intensive use. It easily tolerates temperature changes and is not susceptible to temporary corrosion.
  2. Unlike cheap soapstone and other analogues, jade has the highest heat capacity. This means that the sauna owner will be able to save significantly on steam equipment and firewood.
  3. The stone can be heated over an open fire, this is its difference from jadeite. Also, jade has many properties that are beneficial to everyone’s health. A bath with jade stones is an excellent remedy for the treatment of kidney diseases.

For good heat and activation of beneficial properties, it is enough to purchase several large stones.

Jade in landscape design

The mineral is suitable for the production of slabs, decorative items, framing the banks of ponds and swimming pools. Some types of stone have a translucent structure, which is good for diffusing light and creating partitions.

Much has already been said about the properties of jade. In this section, it is enough just to remind you of the high strength of the material; in addition, it is worse than other stones and is overgrown with moss and algae. To decorate garden ponds, minerals of green and bluish hues are used, as they are in perfect harmony with the other elements of the composition.

The use of jade in industrial construction is not justified due to the high cost of raw materials, however, when constructing private houses, it is quite possible to use stone both for finishing and for strengthening some particularly important structural elements.

Jade Jewelry

Rings, necklaces and bracelets containing this mineral are popular among men and women of different ages. The products have a respectable appearance and are suitable for wearing to various events. Jade is difficult to scratch or damage its structure in any way, so jewelry is bought to last forever. Those who wear the mineral experience improved well-being, increased tone and libido.

After reading the article, it seems that all of humanity’s problems stem from the lack of pieces of jade for everyone personally. Of course, this is not true, but within one person you can correct the situation. The miraculous effect will not be long in coming, and you can buy jade of different colors and textures with the help of our consultants.
