- Real diamonds are not set in silver. The only exceptions are low quality stones. Only gold and platinum are used.
- A fake can be identified by the way the stone is secured in the setting. If the bottom is not visible, it is impossible to read the stamp. Diamonds are always set so that the mark on the bottom can be seen.
- You can recognize a fake by the mark on the bottom if you look at it through a magnifying glass. For example, CZ is cubic zirconia, and LG and Gemesis created indicate that we are dealing with artificial diamonds. They have the same properties, but are much cheaper.
- You can check the clarity of the edges under a magnifying glass. In diamond they are sharply defined, while in glass they are soft and smoothed.
- The originality is confirmed by the play of light. A diamond does not emit a rainbow glow. It glows with an even silvery light.
- Through a large stone you can look at the printed text. The test is that you won’t be able to see the letters through a real diamond because the refraction is too high. If the letters are visible, this is a fake.
- A beam passed through a real cut diamond does not split into two. This is characteristic of cubic zirconia, moissanite, and other crystals.
- Water does not condense on diamonds. If you breathe on a stone, it will fog up. This is a fake.
- Diamond is not visible in a glass of water because it has the same refractive index as water.
- By dropping acid (sulfuric, hydrochloric) on a diamond, you do not risk anything, but the imitation will be damaged irrevocably.
- If you drop a drop of oil on a stone, the drop will not scatter into small drops on a diamond, but on an imitation, yes.
- Cubic zirconia is twice as heavy as diamonds. To determine whether it is a fake, just weigh the stone.
- Moissanite heated to a temperature of 70°C will change color to green and remain that way. Such changes will not happen with a diamond.
- By dipping the stone alternately into hot and cold water, the diamond will remain intact, but the glass will crack.
What you should not do is place diamonds in an open fire. They will burn, thereby confirming their authenticity, but the owner of the stones is unlikely to be happy with this fact.

There is a popular myth that a diamond cannot be seen in water, but this is a misconception. All these variations make a beautiful fairy tale about diamonds, “disappearing” in water, which is simply impossible. How to identify a genuine diamond by color and size
The diamond shimmers shades of gray. The presence of reflections of other colors indicates a fake or low quality diamond. However, do not confuse shine with reflection. The stone reflects the light that passes through it, and in the case of a real diamond, the reflection should be intense, and not glow with all the colors of the rainbow.

A comment: Advice worth heeding. But without an examination and based on weight alone, it is impossible to make a verdict.
- Use magnifying glass or microscope. Natural diamonds have natural inclusions, while analogues and synthetic diamonds they are missing.
A comment: Absolutely true advice, but it is important to have good eyesight and observation to see the smallest dots or voids.
- Impact test. The fame of stone’s hardness is true. But a diamond is a fragile mineral. Therefore, hitting it with a hammer, for example, will destroy it.
Diamond tester for checking a diamond
Most testers measure the thermal conductivity of a stone and thus determine the origin of the mineral. “Diamond testers” distinguish cubic zirconia from diamonds. But there is an artificial stone called moissanite, which has the same thermal conductivity as a diamond.
Moissanite is silicon carbide. Their refractive index is 2,65, while that of diamonds is 2,42. Moissanite also has brighter color flashes
To prevent the Diamond tester from identifying a fake, would-be craftsmen cover it with a film of a thin layer of crystallized carbon. Therefore, only a few types of testers that respond to different indicators can give the most accurate result: thermal conductivity, light absorption, photoluminescence.
