Myths and legends

What about jewelry?

As for such a concept as a precious stone, it does not have a sufficiently clear definition, since stones are evaluated not by one or two, but by a whole complex of characteristics, attributes and properties. If two pieces of jewelry have inserts of the same size, the same shape, and made from the same stone, this does not mean that the cost of the jewelry will be the same. One stone may differ from another in some way, which will affect the price of the jewelry.

In addition to other characteristics by which jewelry is classified, there are also classification by purpose, since each product is designed to perform specific functions. Main classes of jewelry by purpose:

  1. Personal decoration items. These include such popular jewelry as earrings, brooches, pendants, beads, necklaces, medallions, pins, chains, necklaces, and crosses.
  2. Toilet items. A variety of boxes and caskets, hairpins, pins for ties and hats, cufflinks and clips, perfume bottles, hairpins, as well as powder compacts, mirrors, etc.
  3. Smoking accessories. Quite a lot of products belong to this group: mouthpieces, cigarette cases, match holders, snuff boxes, cigar tongs, ashtrays, cigarette holders and pipes.
  4. Items for table setting. Napkin rings, dishes, sugar tongs, cups, spoons, forks, jugs, plates and glasses, decanters, tea strainers, coffee pots, and much more that is used for serving.
  5. Writing utensils: paperweights, pencil cups, paper knives, etc.
  6. Interior items: figurines, vases, mantel clocks, candlesticks, stone panels, chandeliers and much more.
  7. Jewelry for watches: chains, jewelry watches, chalets and bracelets.
  8. Souvenirs: badges, medals, other souvenirs.
  9. Details of weapon decoration – hilts, inserts on the handle of pistols, knife handles, etc.
  10. Ritual objects, objects for performing rituals (for example, a censer, a baptismal font).

The following is the criterion by which I classify jewelry: performance technique. There are three types of equipment: manual, machine and combined.

The most expensive, of course, are handmade products. This is due to the fact that a lot of time and labor is spent on creating such a product, and the resulting decoration or product is completely unique and unique. As a rule, handmade products are single or created in very small quantities, which only gives them value.

Machinery is the production of jewelry using equipment. But jewelry still cannot be created entirely by machine. One way or another, a person participates in the process, performing the most complex operations, some of the final stages of manufacturing.

Combined production is the creation of jewelry from parts and elements that are created by machines by casting, stamping, and pressing. But the assembly of such jewelry is done by hand, and the finishing touches are made by hand by master jewelers.

Thus, we see that it is simply impossible to make the process of creating jewelry completely automated. And each piece of jewelry retains the warmth of the hands of a caring craftsman, who “finished” the piece and gave it shine.

But the most valuable jewelry is, of course, those in the creation of which machines did not participate at all. It is precisely these works of jewelry that collectors hunt for, and those of blue blood and simply very wealthy people strive to take possession of such jewelry. Many handmade jewelry pieces are kept as treasured exhibits in museums around the world.

Not every piece of jewelry can be called jewelry. This is not about costume jewelry or fake stones. The result of jewelry work is a combination of several aspects: the presence of precious metal and artistic processing in the product, the correct purpose of the jewelry and the mark on its inside. Let’s figure out in order why this or that product can be called jewelry.

A precious metal

The word “jeweler” comes from the German juwel, which means “jewel”. Therefore, first of all, jewelry is jewelry that is made of precious metals: gold, silver, platinum or palladium.

Metals are considered precious for several reasons. They are resistant to chemical attack, are rare in nature, and are prohibitively expensive to obtain.

Jewelry is not made from pure precious metals. This is due to the softness of the natural material, its susceptibility to wear and its high price. Typically, jewelry companies use alloys whose composition is kept in the strictest confidence. Alloys differ in color, hardness, melting point, as well as the percentage of the most precious metal. The percentage determines the metal sample, which we will talk about in the next two articles.

Artistic processing

A piece of jewelry made of precious metal can be considered jewelry if it has artistic value. It is thanks to special processing techniques that a piece of jewelry becomes so attractive that you want to get it. Artistic processing includes the following processes: casting, forging, embossing, filigree, enamel, blackening, diamond cutting, rhodium plating and other techniques.

Purpose of the product

You might be surprised, but jewelry is not just something that people put on their fingers, neck, arms and legs. This concept is much broader. Just take a look:

  • Personal jewelry – products that you put on your body. Most often they are talked about when they mean jewelry.
  • Toilet items – jewelry that complements costumes and has practical benefits. For example, tie clips or cufflinks.
  • Accessories – products for toiletries. This could be a watch bracelet or a cigarette case.
  • Headsets — groups of jewelry with the same artistic design. For example, a collection of jewelry consisting of a ring and earrings. You can get acquainted with the AQUAMARINE collections in a special section of our website.
  • Tableware items – products with practical application. For example, spoons, forks and cup holders.

Jewelry also includes watches and icons made of gold and silver. They can be inlaid with precious or semi-precious stones, which we will talk about in the fourth article in the series of materials.

Pick up any piece of jewelry and pay attention to the inside. Real Russian jewelry must have two imprints.

The first stamp is called the name of the factory itself that created the jewelry. The year of creation of the product is encrypted there, as well as the codes of the State Assay Supervision Inspectorate and the manufacturer. The factory puts this mark on itself.

Jewelry name

The second stamp on each product is placed by the State Assay Supervision Inspectorate. The imprint encrypts the region in which the jewelry was made, and also indicates the fineness of the metal.

If you hold jewelry in your hands without a second stamp, it means it is a foreign product or a fake. If there is not a single imprint on the jewelry or the data on it is unclear, you should doubt the authenticity of the product and request the necessary documents for the product.

To sum up

Products can be considered jewelry if they:

  1. Made from precious metal
  2. Have artistic value
  3. Meet one of the above purposes

Remember. Anything that does not fall into this category is considered costume jewelry. She also has the right to life thanks to her beauty, but such jewelry cannot be called jewelry.
