The exhibition of unique treasures is presented by the Gokhran of Russia, and not by the Kremlin museums, although the collection is geographically located in the vicinity of the Armory Chamber.

History of the exhibition of rare treasures

In 1719, by decree of Great Peter, a special room was allocated for storing valuable things belonging to the empire. This is how the Diamond Room appeared, which contained state regalia, valuable jewelry, and orders. A specially developed charter regulated the storage procedure, and the Chamber Board maintained strict control over compliance with the rules.

All attributes of luxury were used only at special events. Magnificent and pompous receptions distinguished the Russian royal court from the European one. During the reign of the Romanov dynasty, the collection was regularly replenished with new items. The history of many things is shrouded in legends, secrets, and intrigue.

Before the outbreak of the First World War, unique treasures were kept in the Winter Palace of St. Petersburg; as the front approached, the valuables were taken to the Moscow Kremlin.

The second wave of replenishment of the Diamond Fund in Moscow occurred in the 50s. XX century. At this time, two largest diamond deposits were discovered in Yakutia. Domestic ones have replenished the fund’s collection and have become examples of modern jewelry art.

The Moscow Diamond Fund Museum displays priceless exhibits. Experts still cannot calculate the real cost of some of them. For example, the legendary crown of Catherine II, studded with thousands of diamonds, the famous Orlov diamond adorning the royal scepter.

In 1967, on the occasion of the half-century anniversary of the Soviet state, the opening of the exhibition of the Diamond Fund took place. Only high-ranking guests of the capital could visit the exhibition. Only later did the property of the Russian state become available to the general public.

Exhibits from the Kremlin Diamond Fund

Today, everyone can see magnificent objects of national heritage. The unique collection of jewelry is under reliable protection; free inspection of the exhibits is not allowed.

The exhibition presents several sections:

  • Imperial regalia of the House of Romanov;
  • Orders decorated with precious stones;
  • Jewelry from the 18th-19th centuries;
  • Works of modern masters;
  • The largest nuggets of gold, platinum, precious stones;
  • Uncut Yakut diamonds;
  • Ural gems;
  • Jeweled items of clothing.

The treasury consists of two halls. Excursions take place in a strictly regulated manner. Each collection is placed in a separate showcase under armored glass. An employee of the foundation takes visitors to each display case, tells the history of the exhibits, and then gives them a couple of minutes to independently examine the items.
