What color of amber is the most expensive?
Baltic amber – is considered to be of the highest quality, which makes it very valuable. Among precious stones, amber can take one of the first places in terms of beauty and variety of colors. The palette of shades amazes even the most sophisticated jewelry lovers. In Baltic amber, yellow, golden-yellow colors predominate, which is why the term “amber color” appeared. The color of amber varies from white, yellow, brown to red. There are greenish, bluish, gray and even black amber. Among them there are even more subtle shades and combinations. Amber can be completely transparent or completely opaque. Amber is not always one color: there are unique combinations of two or more colors and shades, patterns (sometimes they form the most brilliant artistic compositions). This is why amber becomes attractive, charming and unique. What is the rarest color of amber? Blue – the rarest shade of amber and the most valuable. There is less and less bluish amber, this color has almost disappeared. Only 0,2% of all amber is blue, and this color is commonly found in white amber nuggets. Blue amber was formed when the resin traveled in rivers to the Sambia Peninsula and landed in soil rich in pyrite (FeS2). Pyrite intrusions penetrated into small cracks in the resin. Most often this shade is found in white amber. Blue Baltic amber is different from blue Dominican amber. The bluish tint in Dominican amber is visible only under special lighting. Natural red amber is especially rare and occurs in only 0,5% of cases. Red amber can range from orange to dark black. Often a rare color is obtained artificially – by heating transparent amber to oxidize it. Red amber was formed when amber was exposed to air for a long time: the oxidation process, the heat of the sun, fire in the forest. Natural oxidation occurs in air; amber interacts with oxygen and gradually changes its color. Transparent amber becomes more red; yellow and other colors become more concentrated. This is a very long process: changes in color shades could only be noticed after 50-70 years. “Old” amber is highly valued because of its “maturity” and has its own temporary patina. Red amber, called “dragon’s blood”, featured prominently in Shosoin hoards found in Japan. It was very valuable both for its rarity and for its mystical, divine power. White amber occurs in approximately 1-2% of cases. It can be distinguished by its variety of surface and internal textures, and is often called “royal”, “imperial” or “bone” amber, with some mistaking white amber for ivory. White amber may include penetration zones or patterns of yellow, black, blue, green or clear amber. Typically, this amber is distinguished by a variety of textures and “natural ornamentation”. The volatile substances of the resins evaporated very intensively under the influence of solar heat, and the resin took the form of foam. One square millimeter of white amber can contain about 1 million microbubbles measuring 0,001-0,0008 mm. in diameter. The more microbubbles in amber, the whiter it is. Green amber is also rare. It accounts for only about 2%. The greenish tint and sometimes the “crystalline”/”sugar” structure formed after the resin hit the plants and reacted with the chlorophyll pigment that could be found in the plants. Due to its crystalline structure, green amber is sometimes called “sugar” amber. Transparent amber (with a yellowish tint). About 10% of amber is transparent, but most of it is small pieces. Large transparent amber items are especially rare and valuable. This amber color can be called “primary” – this is what fresh tree resin looks like. The resin flowed somewhere in a shady place; therefore, terpenes, the volatile components of the resin, evaporated slowly and did not cloud the resin with gas bubbles, so the amber remained transparent. The shade of transparency could vary from yellowish to dark red; it depends on the degree of oxidation of the amber. If successive streams of resin were stacked in layers, the amber formed layered. It is this amber that contains the most inclusions. Jet – quite common color, about 15%. The resin was thoroughly mixed with the remains of bark and leaf litter. Sometimes there could be only 10-15% resin, and the rest was impurities. Therefore, black amber is more fragile than other colors of amber and is difficult for artists to work with. Black amber often features attractive natural patterns, textures or inclusions. Yellow the most common color, found in about 70% of cases, is various shades of yellow, but this type of amber is often cloudy rather than clear. The resin dripped from the trees under the scorching sun, the volatile components of the resin evaporated and made it cloudy – thousands of small gas bubbles were formed. These bubbles refract light, producing yellow color. In one square millimeter of yellow amber there can be 2500 gas bubbles measuring 0,05-0,0025 mm. in diameter. The more bubbles, the lighter the shade of yellow.
