What color of topaz is the most expensive?

It is reliably known that topaz was used by people at least 3000 years ago. It was worshiped in ancient Egypt thanks to the mystical powers given by the sun god Ra. The stone is not only beautiful in appearance, but also has beneficial properties.

What is this stone?

The name has two meanings: from the Sanskrit “tapaz” (“fire”) or from its location on the island of Topazios in the Red Sea, where this mineral was first discovered. The ancient Romans believed that the crystal could protect its owner from enemies and reconcile warring parties, as well as slow down the aging process.

Materials

  • Mohs hardness: 8;
  • refractive value: 1,62–1,63;
  • specific gravity: 3,4–3,6;
  • transparency: from full to half;
  • shine: strong, glassy;
  • fracture: conchoidal;
  • cleavage: perfect;
  • color: colorless, yellow, orange, brown, red, pink, blue, green.

Topaz is widely used in the jewelry industry. It lends itself well to cutting, and due to its brilliance and transparency, it looks great in any jewelry. The minerals have good hardness and a deep palette of shades.

Place of Birth

Mineral deposits are located in Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Myanmar, Namibia, USA, Norway, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Japan, Madagascar, and on the island of Ceylon. The largest topaz crystals and faceted minerals can be seen in museum collections. In Brazil, in the province of Minas Gerais, a giant weighing 5 tons was discovered.

Types of topaz

The most common are colorless crystals. Let’s consider what color topaz can be found in nature or created artificially.

Blue

This color, together with blue, is considered the most noble. There are several types of this crystal: London Blue, Swiss Blue, Sky Blue.

london blue

London stone has a deep and rich blue color. This is the most expensive mineral from the blue series. This shade can be obtained through refining through long-term processing.

Jewelry with this type of topaz from the Moscow Jewelry Factory catalog looks elegant and aristocratic. The most popular models of earrings, necklaces, rings, and pendants are inlaid with London Blue stones and set in gold of different shades.

swiss blue

For the first time, samples of Swiss Blue topaz were discovered in Switzerland. Today crystals are mined in Namibia, Australia, and Japan. Swiss Blue shade is obtained through heat treatment and irradiation. The faceted gem is distinguished by its clear transparency and bright pearlescent luster.

Sky Blue

Sky Blue has a soft blue tint and is extremely rare in nature. Titanium ions give it this color. The crystal differs from Swiss Blue in lower brightness. To obtain a more pronounced shade, specialists irradiate or heat it strongly.

Yellow

The color range of this group can vary from yellow to brown. The golden mineral has been known since ancient times, but its price is not too high. It does not have any special properties.

Brown

Brown color is formed quite rarely in nature. Most of these minerals are obtained by heat treatment and irradiation of colorless crystals.

Pink

Natural pink crystals are also very rare, so their prices are quite high. Currently, ordinary gems are dyed pink using irradiation or heat treatment.

White

Just like the yellow mineral, the white gem is often found in nature. Crystals of other shades can be obtained from it, for example, lemon, purple and even black gems. White topaz is often confused with diamond, although the prices and optical properties of the minerals differ greatly.

mystic topaz

Magic topaz has shades of blue, green, and purple. Its rainbow appearance is obtained artificially. To do this, spraying is used, giving the crystal a golden-brown or titanium glow.

Nano-topaz

Nano crystals are synthesized stones grown in laboratory conditions. They completely replicate the entire structure and properties of natural minerals: high hardness, density, bright shine, transparency, uniform color. Nano-crystals are obtained using the hydrothermal method, as a result of which their properties are similar to natural crystals. In addition to the hydrothermal synthesis method, others can be used: flux, Verneuil, Czochralski or Bagdasarov methods.

Swarovski

Natural Swarovski Topaz is a crystal processed using a special technology with perfectly polished edges. Jewelry with it has an incredible shine thanks to the chaton cutting method. A special coating gives the stones color and various effects (with haze, rainbow tints and others). Crystal is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to irradiation-dyed gemstones.

Imperial

Imperial topaz (Imperial) is a mineral with a color range from pinkish-orange to light golden. Imperial minerals are mined in Brazil and are produced in limited quantities.

How to distinguish a fake?

Only a jeweler/gemologist can reliably establish authenticity. Also recommended:

  • touch a gem: coolness will emanate from the original;
  • rub the stone on a piece of woolen fabric: it will become electrified and attract small objects;
  • check the mineral using a refractometer: the refractive index of the original is 1.61-1.62;
  • look at some defects and cracks of a natural gem. In terms of hardness, it is second only to diamond and ruby, so it will not leave scratches.

How to properly care for jewelry with topaz?

To ensure that your favorite jewelry always looks great, you need to handle it carefully.

  • Topaz is considered a fairly hard mineral, but has low strength and can break if accidentally dropped or hit. Therefore, remove jewelry before physical activity or housework.
  • When cleaning, use a mild soap solution, warm water, a brush and a cloth.
  • Store jewelry in a jewelry box separately from other gems.

How to wear?

Topaz is suitable for daily wear. The only condition is to protect it from the sun, as it may lose its unique shade.

Jewelry with this gem looks great with evening dresses, summer dresses and casual clothes.

What is the cost of jewelry with natural stone?

The cost of topaz in the finished product is influenced by various factors: the manufacturing company, the precious metal, the size of the mineral and the use of other gems along with it.

The Miuz Diamonds catalog presents a variety of jewelry with topaz: rings, earrings, pendants, necklaces, bracelets, piercings, brooches. Clients most often prefer rings and gold earrings with topaz.

Topaz was worshiped in ancient Egypt, as it was believed that it carries mystical powers given by the sun god Ra. Now many collectors, fashionistas and lovers of beauty want to own this precious gem. This stone has good hardness and a deep palette of shades, the most valuable of which are orange-yellow – imperial. We talked about this variety of gems in the article “Topaz Imperial”.

The most commonly used shades of topaz in jewelry are blue and light blue. Why the blue mineral is considered so popular and what secrets it hides we will tell in the article.

This mineral was first discovered by the Romans more than two thousand years ago on the island of Topazios in the Red Sea. They believed that the crystal could protect its owner from enemies and bring reconciliation between warring parties. However, there is another belief that says: the word “topaz” comes from Sanskrit, which means “fire”.

At all times, people valued and revered topazes, as gems were considered sacred. In the legends of different nations, this stone is called the whim of the Lord, the stone of the Apocalypse, the tear of an angel, the gem of court magicians and wizards. According to one legend, Lucifer, until he was expelled from paradise, wore clothes decorated with topazes. In the Bible, these minerals are mentioned as stones that adorned the breastplate of the high priest.

Tracing the history of precious topaz is difficult, as its identity has been confusing. In the old days, all yellowish gemstones were called topaz, and blue ones were called sapphires, regardless of what mineral they actually were. However, in the 18th century, scientists were able to determine the properties of topaz and separate them from other gemstones.

Physico-chemical properties of gems

Most topaz grows as crystals in veins, voids in igneous rocks, and cavities in pegmatite. Topaz also occurs as water-worn pebbles in rivers formed by the weathering of pegmatites. When the stone just begins to form, it has no color at all. The blue tone of topaz is given by fluorine, titanium and water, which are contained in igneous rocks.

Color palette of blue topaz

Topaz comes in a variety of shades: colorless, yellow, pink, orange, red, brown, purple, blue and green. The most popular color of topaz is blue and blue. These popular shades have their own trade names:

  • “Sky Blue” – has a soft blue tint and is extremely rare in nature. The crystals themselves are very transparent and sometimes completely colorless. Most specimens are only slightly tinted blue, which can be seen in light. Titanium ions give the natural blue tint to the stone. To give the crystal a more pronounced shade, experts subject it to refinement: irradiation or heating at high temperatures.
  • “Swiss Blue” or Swiss – the first jewelry samples were found in Switzerland, which is why “Swiss blue” comes from the abbreviated name of the country. Today such stones are mined in Namibia, Australia, and Japan. Experts have also learned how to impart a Swiss Blue hue to topazes using heat treatment and irradiation. The cut gem has clear transparency and a bright pearlescent luster.
  • “London Blue” or London – deep blue color. London Blue characterizes the maximum possible blueness of the stone. This is the most valuable and expensive of blue topaz. However, such a shade can only be obtained through refining through long-term processing. This shade is also called “London” because it was gemologists from London who were the first to give topaz such a deep color. However, the British are sure that the stone received its name for its resemblance to the summer evening sky.
