What is the opinion of scientists about coral calcium and its effect on human health? Calcium supplements are products that are incredibly popular. Especially for their ability to improve the condition of the body’s bones. There are many different types of calcium supplements on the market. It is quite difficult to choose one among them. Mention should be made of the well-known calcium carbonate, calcium orotate and calcium citrate. One of the most unique and exotic supplements is coral calcium. Many claims have been made about the health benefits of coral calcium. But there is not enough scientific evidence for this.

What is coral calcium?

Coral calcium is a form of calcium carbonate. This is indicated by its name. Coral calcium is obtained from fossilized coral sediments. In fact, it is the most abundant form of calcium on Earth. Coral calcium is formed from marine invertebrates that release calcium into ocean water, thereby regulating the pH level of surrounding waters. When calcium is released, a hard skeleton is formed. And when a lot of corals are formed, the well-known coral reef appears. Coral contains not only calcium, but also other minerals. Magnesium in particular, which makes coral calcium a supplement with wide applications. However, given the irreplaceability of coral deposits, is it worth destroying them to create nutritional supplements when other largely similar forms of calcium are available? And most importantly, these forms are better absorbed by the body than coral calcium.

How is coral calcium different from regular calcium carbonates?

Despite being a carbonate, coral calcium is actually slightly different from regular rock calcium carbonate. Its geometric crystal structure is created by living organisms, which gives coral calcium certain unique characteristics. Organic molecules are embedded inside coral calcium crystals. This, in fact, distinguishes it from forms of calcium carbonate that are extracted from rocks. Thanks to these organic molecules, coral minerals are significantly richer in mineral composition than conventional forms of calcium.

Is coral calcium effective as a dietary supplement?

Sellers are making advertising noise around the beneficial effects of coral calcium on human health. But despite this, it should be consumed with caution. None of the health claims for coral calcium have been scientifically proven. This does not mean that it is not effective, but any statements should be taken critically. Much of the coral calcium found in dietary supplements is obtained from coral reefs in shallow waters near Okinawa in Japan. The reason for the increased attention to it was the large gap in life expectancy of Okinawans compared to residents of the whole world. The theory says that locals live longer and healthier because they drink water rich in coral calcium. However, it was found that islanders actually consume less than 1000 mg of calcium per day. And there are many other factors that are more likely to influence longevity. For example, a famous healthy diet and exercise regime, as well as low stress levels.

False claims about the benefits of coral calcium

Today there is so little scientifically reliable information about the benefits of coral calcium that it is very difficult to say how effective it is. However, it is known that the US Federal Trade Commission in 2004 reprimanded several manufacturers of coral calcium for advertising its ability to treat many diseases, including cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis and hypertension. According to the FDA (English Food and Drug Administration, USA), coral supplement has no advantages over cheaper and safer drugs available in pharmacies. Of concern is the fact that coral reefs near Okinawa and other regions are heavily polluted with heavy metals (lead, mercury). It should be noted that the Japanese themselves do not accept anything like this.

What is the difference between coral calcium and rock calcium?

Coral calcium contains 2 parts calcium and 1 part magnesium, as well as many other important minerals. Japanese coral calcium was tested in the USA. Ionization testing has shown that coral calcium quickly ionizes within 15 minutes, making it easy for the body to absorb. This is the advantage of coral calcium over regular calcium carbonate, which requires much more stomach acid for ionization and absorption. One study that compared the rate of absorption showed a significant advantage of coral calcium over regular calcium. However, this study had a very small sample size, which included only 12 subjects. Therefore, the researchers recommend treating these results with caution.

Bone Health and Coral Calcium

There is much evidence for the importance of calcium in maintaining healthy bones. However, specifically for coral calcium, there are quite a few of them. Scientists have conducted only one animal study, the results of which showed the effectiveness of coral calcium in preventing bone loss due to estrogen deficiency. Of course, a lack of scientific evidence does not necessarily mean that coral calcium is not effective. Most likely, funding expensive research into the effect of coral calcium on bones simply cannot generate much profit. However, when it comes to bone grafting, it should be noted that many studies have been conducted, the results of which indicate the positive effects of coral calcium. Data on the effectiveness of coral calcium as a bone graft may indicate the benefits of coral calcium for bone in general. A study conducted in Germany in 1998 reported 89 cases of coral calcium being used for facial and jaw bone grafts. Calcium has been found to be well taken and facilitate the growth of new bones.

Other Uses of Coral Calcium

In the human body, calcium is most absorbed by the bones. However, it is also considered an important factor for the normal functioning of cells and the overall health of the body. Unfortunately, too little research has been done on the effects of coral calcium on body tissues other than bones. Therefore, few conclusions can be drawn. However, we can look at some traditional uses of calcium that have been around for a surprisingly long time. Coral calcium has been used for medicinal purposes in Europe since the Middle Ages. It was sold by traders from Asia and transported to Italy, and only then to other European countries. Traditionally, calcium was used at that time to treat eye inflammation, bleeding, and to strengthen the heart. However, we do not know whether calcium is effective for such purposes.

Coral calcium and colon cancer

In one animal study, Japanese scientists examined the effects of coral calcium on colon cancer (1999). His results suggest that coral calcium may slow the growth of this type of cancer by increasing the number of macrophages and cells that kill cancer. This process helped boost the animals’ immune response and reduce metastases. In comparison, regular calcium carbonate was found to be ineffective.

Antiviral effect of coral calcium

Again, we must rely on the results of just one study. In laboratory settings, coral calcium has been combined with many influenza viruses, including the avian influenza virus and the H1N1 virus that caused the 2009 pandemic. The scientists found that these viruses were absorbed into the porous surface of the coral calcium, which helped neutralize them. They hypothesized that calcium might be effective in fighting the flu.

Side Effects of Coral Calcium

  • Serious side effects are rare, but less serious side effects are common, including bloating
  • Less common – abdominal pain, nausea, infrequent bowel movements
  • More serious but very rare – kidney stones, loss of appetite and elevated blood calcium levels

It should be taken into account that in some conditions calcium is excessively excreted from the body: strenuous physical work, intense training in athletes, prolonged immobilization (limited mobility, bed rest).

Calcium is an important element of the body’s buffer system, which maintains pH at the level required for each system and environment of the body. Unfortunately, the diet of most of us is designed in such a way that 80% of the foods we consume daily are acid-forming. “Alkaline” products – fresh vegetables, fruits, dates, beans, almonds, flaxseed oil, etc. – make up no more than 20%. In most environments of our body, the reaction is alkaline (with the exception of the stomach, some parts of the intestines, vagina, skin). If we constantly take acid-forming foods, this gradually leads to the development of acidosis, i.e. “acidification” of the blood, lymph, and intercellular fluid occurs, and the functioning of enzymes and metabolism is disrupted.
