Translated from ancient Greek, it means “indestructible.” But this is what a gem really is, given that it has no equal in terms of hardness. How to identify a rough diamond
A diamond that has not been worked is very similar to a simple transparent stone. It either has no shade, or is painted in a subtle yellow or brownish color. As a rule, only a small percentage of uncut minerals are as colorless as the diamonds that you have seen at least once in your life on the shelves of jewelry stores. Most natural crystals are colored, albeit quite noticeably, which is why completely colorless and perfectly transparent gems are much more expensive. When determining the natural origin of a stone, it is very difficult to do it yourself. As a rule, the Internet describes a bunch of ways to identify a fake, but all of them are not entirely correct. Only a specialist can determine a natural gem using a portable tester. How does he work? Heat or electricity is passed through the mineral and its electrical or thermal conductivity coefficient is determined. If this is a fake, it will not have the same characteristics as a natural crystal.
How are diamonds processed?
Cutting a diamond is more than just a responsible task, because with any wrong move or tactic, it can easily be ruined. But how are diamonds processed and, most importantly, how, if the mineral is considered the hardest on planet Earth? Indeed, the first stage of processing is a split. But do not think that the gem cannot be crushed. If you do it correctly, namely, in the right direction, given the structure of the crystal lattice, then everything happens quite easily, without harm to the nugget. By the way, they crack it, surprisingly, with another diamond. To do this, they find the smallest crack in the stone, insert a fragment into it and hit it with an accurate blow, and the crystal is cut off. It is also often used to cut a gem with a diamond-coated cutting tool. The next step is cutting. The ideal number of facets is equal to the number 57. That is, the diamond that has exactly 57 facets carved from a diamond is considered the best in shape. But the form may be different. Most popular:
