Comes from the ancestors. *kopātī, from cat. among other things happened: ukr. kopati, bulg. digging, Serbohorv. kopati, kopapam, Slovenian. kopáti, korȃm, Czech. korat, Slovak. korať, Polish, V.-Luz. koras, n.-luzh. koraś. Goes back to the Proto-Indo-Europeans. *(s)kape- .
