During Soviet times, crystal from the Czech Moser manufactory was as much an object of desire as American jeans and Yugoslav furniture. The latter, by the way, was one of the reasons why the authorities of this resort town did not want to give Ludwig Moser permission to open his own manufactory – one of the components of crystal is lead oxide, which is harmful to human health. Before opening his own factory, a professional engraver and merchant Moser maintained a workshop-shop for 35 years: he bought finished products from other manufacturers and decorated glasses, vases and other objects with engravings. The workshop appeared in 1857 – this is considered the founding date of the brand Moser. Moser opened his production in 1892, after he revived the long-forgotten formula of lead-free crystal, which is still a trade secret of the brand. 
© Moser press service However, not only this formula distinguishes Moser from many other manufactories engaged in the production of Bohemian glass. Firstly, wool, agate or hematite are used to polish products of this brand, but in no case is acid used for these purposes in other factories. Secondly, the masters of the manufactory have developed about a dozen signature colors for crystal coloring, named after various semi-precious stones: light blue aquamarine, soft green beryl, purple amethyst, honey-brown topaz. Thirdly, without exception, all products of this brand are made by hand – blown, polished, gilded or engraved.

Ludwig Moser and his son Leo, who was first the art director of the manufactory and who headed it after his father’s death, were sensitive to all fashion trends. Suffice it to say that the engraving on the vase Victoria, which is still in the brand’s assortment, was made based on the painting “Flowers: Carnation” famous Czech painter Alphonse Mucha. To this day, the manufactory maintains its traditions, but at the same time is open to everything new. Classic collections – Royal, Paula or Copenhagen – whose design was developed back in the early 1900s, have not lost popularity for a whole century. And such famous glass artists as Jiri Suhajek, whose works are stored in the British Victoria and Albert Museum. This summer Moser attracted Russian designer Konstantin Gaidai to collaborate. And as a result, they were born “Domes”, a line of champagne glasses. Their shape and cut are reminiscent of the domes of the Intercession Cathedral, which inspired Gaidai for this set.

And perhaps that is why the products of this brand were willingly ordered or accepted as gifts by monarchs, politicians and celebrities. Already in the early 1900s, Ludwig Moser became the official supplier of the Persian Shah Musaferedeen and the British monarch Edward VII. In 1923, a set created at the manufactory Pope (i.e., “papa”), consisting of 214 items, was sent to the Vatican to Pope Pius XI. A set of glasses and dishes from the collection splendid, considered the most recognizable among products Moser, decorated with elegant engraving and covered with a wide border of 24-karat gold, was given as a wedding gift to the future Queen Elizabeth II in 1947.
