How are emeralds created in laboratories?
For hydrothermal crystal growth, special durable steel vessels are used – autoclaves that can withstand extreme pressures and temperatures. Crushed beryls (emerald belongs to the beryl family), low-quality emeralds, as well as fragments after cutting stones are turned into powder, which is immersed in a sealed steel vessel – an autoclave. Inside the autoclave, using chemical components and heating, a saturated solution is obtained. Next, the solution crystallizes and settles on the seed plates – this is how an emerald crystal grows. The procedure ends with cooling. The paradox is that emeralds obtained in laboratory conditions are more perfect in composition and properties than natural stones, for example: – have the same hardness on the Mohs scale 7,5 – 8,
