In order to bring the aquarium design as close to natural as possible, many aquarists use stones. This is not surprising, because stones give the aquarium a natural look, and create additional contrast with living plants and driftwood. The benefits of stones in an aquarium do not end there, but we will talk about this in another article.

Volcanic lava – what it is like

Lava is formed when a volcano releases magma onto the Earth’s surface. Due to cooling and interaction with gases that make up the atmosphere, magma changes its properties, forming lava. Lava varies from volcano to volcano. It differs in composition, color, temperature, impurities, etc. The color of lava is mainly due to the mineral content in it.

Interesting fact. The word lava was borrowed into Russian from Italian (Italian lava), through German (German Lava) in the 18th century. Italian lava means “falling, crawling, sliding, descending (down)”, “flooding” or “that which descends” as a result of a volcanic eruption.

There are three types of volcanic lava: Basalt, Carbonate and Silicon. In terms of its composition, Silicon Lava is best suited for an aquarium due to its neutrality. It contains 53-62% silicon dioxide (silica).

Lava stone is considered unique because it contains the entire range of microelements that are necessary to maintain the life of living organisms. That is why around volcanoes all natural niches are usually occupied and the plant kingdom flourishes.

Benefits of using lava in an aquarium

Improving water quality

If you look closely at the surface of the lava, you will see that it is made up of numerous tiny holes. Due to this structure, this rock is extremely porous and allows aquarium water to easily spread through it. Beneficial bacteria settle inside the lava and on its surface, which process harmful substances contained in aquarium water, turning them into useful ones. When processing harmful substances, bacteria release oxygen and nitrogen into the water. Simply put, lava rock is an excellent material that participates in the nitrogen cycle. So the first huge advantage of using lava in an aquarium is the processing of harmful substances into useful ones.

Interesting fact. Iron is a polyvalent element and under normal conditions can exist in two forms: divalent (reduced) and trivalent (oxidized). Plants mostly need divalent iron for healthy development. Red lava is especially rich in iron oxide.

Lava stone contains a huge range of mineral compounds necessary for the proper and healthy development of aquarium plants. It contains potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn) and divalent iron compound (FeOH2), which solves the problem of plant chlorosis.

Light weight

If you compare lava with most stones of other rocks, it will have less weight. This is again due to its porous structure. Thanks to this property, when using lava as decoration, you do not need to worry too much about possible damage to the glass in the aquarium.

When using multiple lava stones stacked on top of each other, they must be secured together. This will prevent rocks from accidentally falling onto the glass or animals in the aquarium. To connect the stones together, you can use an aquarium sealant or two-component epoxy glue. We recommend using regular cyanoacrylate glue for gluing stones, using cotton pads or cigarette filters. This method, in our opinion, is the simplest, fastest and safest.

Ideal surface for aquarium plant roots

The highly porous surface provides an ideal base for mosses to grow on it, as well as for the roots of some aquarium plant species, such as ferns, anubias and bucephalandras, to attach to it. The easiest way is to use regular cotton thread. After 2-3 weeks, the thread decomposes, but during this time the plant manages to attach itself to the stone with its roots or rhizoids. Using fine lava fraction as a filler for a filter, soil or substrate

Another great option for using lava in an aquarium is to use it as a filler in an external filter. To do this, lava stone is crushed in special crushers into small pieces of the desired fraction. The finer fraction 1-3, 3-5, 5-20 is well suited for laying in the lower layers of aquarium soil; another neutral or nutritious soil is poured on top of it. Such a cake will be an excellent biological filter material and will prevent soil acidification. The larger fraction is very often used as a filler for an external filter. Due to its large surface area, volcanic lava is excellent for the colonization of beneficial bacteria inside the external filter. Some aquarists use fine lava as the main substrate.

Lava as a “food source”

The porous surface of the lava provides plenty of food for our favorite shrimp. They constantly move over these stones, moving their little paws in search of tasty food.

Using lava as cover

Safety. Shrimp like to be in a safe place when they molt. Therefore, creating a cave from small pieces of lava is ideal for these purposes. Such “shelter caves” will be a favorite place for other small inhabitants of the aquarium.
