Today, the most famous designers are working on the creation of accessories belonging to this category, and the price of some works exceeds the cost of jewelry. Preference for jewelry is given not only by young people, but also by people of fairly mature age and respectable status. Very often, even world-class “stars” emphasize their images with just such decorations. What is the secret of the popularity of costume jewelry? First of all, the fantastic variety of these accessories. Today there are many styles in which jewelry is simply inappropriate. Another reason for the universal love for jewelry is the incredible expressiveness of jewelry. And, of course, the affordable cost of the products. The price range for jewelry is so wide that fashionistas of any income can easily find stylish, beautiful, and at the same time affordable jewelry. But why does costume jewelry have so many benefits? The answer is simple: thanks to the materials. More precisely, thanks to the ability of talented craftsmen to transform available materials into real works of art. The basis of most jewelry is metal fittings. It is made from various alloys with certain properties. The shade and ductility of the alloy depend on the composition. In our article we will look at the alloys most often used for making jewelry. Brass is an alloy most often used in the manufacture of costume jewelry and accessories for jewelry. It is a combination of copper and zinc. Depending on the ratio of these metals, the shade of the alloy varies: from golden yellow to light red. Alloys with a low zinc content (from 3 to 20%) are also called tombac. Such brasses are distinguished by their yellow color, very similar to gold. These alloys are used to make luxury jewelry. Although zinc itself was discovered only in the XNUMXth century, alloys of this metal and copper were used in ancient Rome. The Romans obtained brass by alloying copper with galma, a zinc ore. Another material that has become widespread in the creation of jewelry is cupronickel. It is an alloy of copper and nickel. It may also contain additions of manganese and iron. Cupronickel is perfectly processed both hot and cold, and is also highly resistant to corrosion. Thanks to these qualities, this alloy is an excellent material for the manufacture of artistic products and is actively used in the manufacture of costume jewelry and accessories. There is an opinion that the use of cupronickel jewelry not only perfectly complements the image, but also has a beneficial effect on the body of its owner. This theory is confirmed by the fact that the elements that make up the alloy are present in the human body and play a very important role in the operation of its systems. Like silver, cupronickel has antiseptic properties. But this is not the only thing that makes this alloy a man-made analogue of a noble metal. The similarity is also evident in its color. Brass is another copper-based alloy that has found use as a material for making jewelry. Moreover, it is used both for creating budget jewelry and for making luxury jewelry, the cost of which is comparable to jewelry. As in previous alloys, the main component of brass is copper, and the additives are zinc, antimony and tin. Depending on the ratio of the components, the shade of the metal varies. The predominance of tin in the alloy gives it a light gray matte color. And if copper dominates, the brass becomes brown. Products in this case have a very decorative, as if aged appearance. The presence of antimony gives the brass a beautiful light shade. By the way, this alloy has very high corrosion resistance. Brass, consisting of copper and zinc, has a very close resemblance to gold in appearance, but with regard to such properties as strength, breaststroke is superior to the precious metal. All of the above alloys are durable, aesthetically pleasing and non-toxic materials. They are easy to process and can retain their properties for a long time. Of course, in the manufacture of costume jewelry and accessories for jewelry, other metals and alloys are also used, for example, stainless steel, surgical steel, jewelry steel and others. However, many of them are quite expensive, and their use for making jewelry is not always rational. The alloys discussed in our article are examples of materials in which such indicators as aesthetics, ease of processing, strength, safety and cost represent the optimal combination. Thanks to their existence, we have the opportunity to complement our looks with stunningly beautiful, stylish and affordable accessories.

The image of a modern teacher – what he should be

What should a teacher be like today in order to become not only a source of information for students, but also a worthy example? As Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy once said: “a teacher must have two qualities – great knowledge and a big heart.” We, for our part, believe that there is one more quality that is mandatory for every modern teacher – the ability to be stylish. subscribe to ©2013 – 2023 Angelissimo.ru The category of jewelry made from inexpensive materials is called metal jewelry. Such decorations are a type of decorative and applied art products. Translated into Russian (bijouterie – French origin) the word does not mean an element of decoration or accessory. It roughly translates to “trade in counterfeit jewelry.” In the USSR there was no such concept at all: metal jewelry, the name of which the subsequent generation became familiar with, was simply called “haberdashery” in the Soviet Union. This included a wide range of goods made of leather, plastic, and alloys.

What metals are used in jewelry alloys?

In the 90s, the concept of “haberdashery” acquired a noble meaning and was separated into the class of jewelry and accessories. For costume jewelry, alloys based on precious metals and non-ferrous metals were used. To improve qualities, new elements are added to alloys. The technology allows us to achieve an original look and improved quality of finished products. Jewelry becomes stronger, harder, more ductile, and better amenable to welding and joining. The table describes the main types of jewelry alloys for the production of costume jewelry: This is nothing more than a copper, nickel, manganese, iron combination in the melt. The alloy became famous back in the 3rd century BC. e. like “white copper”. It looks like silver, has “magical” properties, and comes in different shades depending on the composition. If with silver components, then it is purely metallic in color. A classic in a cupronickel frame – turquoise. Shades of agate, garnet, citrine, quartz, and tourmaline look great. An alloy of copper and zinc, enhanced with various elements. Thus, tools, weapons, jewelry, and ancient household items were made from a melt of red copper and tin. Modern melts are high-tech materials, alloyed with zinc, nickel, aluminum, beryllium, phosphorus, and silicon. Due to this, metal of different physical and chemical parameters is obtained. It is molten nickel with copper and zinc. If the first component is larger in size, the alloy-based products are white in color with greenish, bluish tints. Nickel silver is highly resistant to corrosion. Therefore, it is used from industry (for parts of precision instruments) to medical instruments. Like cupronickel, it looks like silver. However, much cheaper. An alloy known back in Ancient Egypt. It is based on tin. In the manufacture of jewelry, we use a grade of pewter without nickel or lead. It is suitable for casting technology, amenable to processing, gilding, and silvering. These are molten copper and zinc, alloyed with additives. More often than not, brass is yellowish in color, which is similar to a shade of gold. It became known in Ancient Rome. Previously in Russia it was used as counterfeit gold. In the times of Roman Augustus it was called “aurichalcum” and was used for minting sestertia and dupondium.

Protective coatings

The most common are gold plating, rhodium plating, and silver plating. To make these, electroplating is used. The technique allows you to apply the thinnest layer of yellow metal, base metals, and white metal. Covers both metallic and non-metallic surfaces. The application of one version of metal to another by immersion in an electrolyte medium serves the purpose of decorating the finished product. As well as increasing resistance to mechanical stress, eliminating damage, prolonging shine, and making it possible to restore the coating in the future. The most popular types of electroplating in jewelry are rhodium plating, gilding, and oxidation.

Electroplating process

In electroplating, workpieces are placed in a so-called galvanic bath. Inside the tank there is a salt solution of the metal that is applied according to the technology. In order for the metal contained in the solution to settle on the jewelry, an electric current is passed through a homogeneous liquid system. Thus, the composition lies in an even layer on the surface of earrings, rings, chains, and other jewelry of various shapes. Typically, gold, silver, rhodium, and other rhodium-based melts are used for coating.

Three secrets of electroplating

  • galvanization procedure at least 10 times in a row;
  • the processing process takes several hours;
  • electroplating only in sealed conditions.

The resulting coating is thinner than a human hair. The thicker the layer, the more practical it is. The coating with precious metals does not crumble, does not fade, and does not leave marks on the skin or clothes. It increases resistance to corrosion, protects against darkening, color changes, and the owner from contact with alloys and allergies.

In jewelry making, plating with gold, silver, and rhodium compounds is also used. Do you want to know which material is suitable for production? Then get advice from specialists.
