Germicidal UV lamps and quartz lamps are not the same thing

It is important to understand that bactericidal UV lamps and ordinary quartz lamps (for example, the Solnyshko quartz lamp) are not the same thing. Yes, both types of these lamps are ultraviolet emitters, but with different design and user characteristics.

About quartz UV lamps

  • arthritis, inflammatory diseases of the respiratory system, bronchial asthma;
  • purulent wounds and ulcers, bedsores, burns and frostbite, mastitis, etc.;
  • aphthous stomatitis, periodontal disease, etc.;
  • diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system;
  • skin diseases (eczema, psoriasis, various fungi, etc.).

In addition to the fact that quartz lamps are an effective therapeutic and prophylactic agent, for a long time they have been used to disinfect air, since they also kill germs. But at present, quartz lamps are practically not used for disinfecting air and surfaces, since they have been replaced by safe and specialized lamps – bactericidal ones.

Germicidal UV lamps use uviol glass to cut off ozone

The thing is that Quartz lamps owe their name to the glass of the same name – quartz glass. It transmits through itself the entire spectrum emitted by mercury, including ozone-forming spectrum. But ozone is not needed for air disinfection, and in large volumes ozone is deadly, since it has a high oxidizing ability, oxidizing everything living and nonliving, therefore quartz glass in bactericidal lamps for disinfection was replaced with uviolic. Such glass is capable of filtering out the harmful ozone-forming spectrum.

But for some reason lamps with uviol glass were not called uviol, but were called bactericidal, the very name of which emphasizes their purpose (the root of the word is derived from the words “bacteria” and the Latin “caedo” – I kill).

To confirm the feasibility of using bactericidal lamps in the fight against microbes and viruses, we will make an excerpt from the conclusion and recommendations of the Tuberculosis Research Institute of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and the Regional Laboratory of the Scientific Center of Virology and Biotechnology “Vector”:

Direct UV bactericidal irradiation of air and surfaces with open irradiators and active air recirculation with bactericidal irradiators-recirculators allows for complete bactericidal treatment (disinfection) of the H5N1 serotype bird flu virus located on the surface and in the air in accordance with the technical performance parameters presented in the technical documentation (passport) of the irradiators.

These scientific research results indicate the complete disinfection and destruction of pathogenic bacteria by bactericidal lamps.

As a result of quartzization of air with quartz lamps, it is enriched with ozone, which is deadly if the maximum permissible concentration is exceeded (or poisonous, or very toxic – understand it as you wish), since it strongly oxidizes everything living and inanimate, so after quartzization the room should be ventilated. The continuous operation of a conventional quartz lamp is no more than 30 minutes, followed by a break of at least 15 minutes.

Ozone is very toxic due to its high oxidizing power. Exposure to ozone on the body can lead to premature death, as it damages the tissues of the respiratory organs, and when exposed to cholesterol in the human blood, it forms insoluble forms leading to atherosclerosis.

Germicidal lamps do not produce ozone

Germicidal lamps do not produce ozone, because the glass of the lamp filters out the ozone-forming spectral line of 185 nm. As a result, we can conclude that the operation of bactericidal lamps does not cause ozone emissions even in minimal concentrations, therefore their use is safe for the respiratory system, and rooms with continuously operating bactericidal lamps do not require mandatory ventilation.

Operating principle of quartz lamps

C – 200-280 nm, far ultraviolet, which is bactericidal.

Under the influence of UV-C, the DNA of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other pathogenic microorganisms is deactivated, their ability to reproduce and the ability to cause diseases disappears. In just 20 minutes of operation, the lamps can destroy up to 99% of all dangerous microbes in the room, which is especially important during seasonal epidemics.

Types of quartz lamps

There are two types of quartz lamps, differing in purpose:

1. Bactericidal irradiators for quartz treatment of premises are devices with an ultraviolet radiation spectrum of 200-280 nm. It is difficult to list which microbes a bactericidal lamp kills, since the list is quite large. The main ones are: streptococci, staphylococci, tuberculosis, diphtheria, E. coli, fungi, mold, yeast, influenza and other viruses, microbes, pathogens. 2. Quartz lamps with a wavelength of 240-280 nm for preventive and therapeutic purposes. Even during our childhood, tube-quartz devices were used in clinics, hospitals, sanatoriums and other medical institutions. They are treated using special attachments. What are the types of bactericidal irradiators?

Indications for the use of quartz lamps are:

– Vitamin D deficiency, prevention of rickets, which is typical for children;

– Colds, viral, inflammatory and chronic diseases of the ENT organs: influenza, sinusitis, sinusitis, rhinitis, otitis, pharyngotracheitis, laryngotracheitis, bronchitis, tonsillitis, asthma, etc.;
