What to do if the ring does not fit on your finger?

What to do if your favorite gold ring begins to dangle on your finger or the long-awaited gift turns out to be half a size too small? There is only one way out – go to a jeweler or try to solve the problem yourself. But then you can’t do without special knowledge. YuK has collected the simplest and most effective ways to change your ring size – quickly and at no extra cost.

When might you need to change your ring size?

  • suddenly gained weight or, on the contrary, lost weight;
  • wanted to make a surprise and bought a ring without trying it on;
  • purchased a ring from an online store based on their size chart;
  • the ring was inherited as a family heirloom, but it turned out to be small/large;
  • After many years of marriage and since your youth, your parameters have changed.

What rings can be reduced?

In this matter, everything depends on the experience of the jeweler and the appearance of the ring. The three most “problem-free” models include:

  1. Laconic smooth rings without inlay and signet rings. Masters can handle such models in a matter of minutes by squeezing the ring on the punch. But if the product has precious stone inserts/engravings, then it will be more complicated;
  2. Rings with an inscription and openwork inserts. However, be prepared for the fact that the primary integrity of the drawing will be violated;
  3. Rings with stones. The master will require special care, as well as knowledge of the properties of precious stones. Even the most minimal compression deforms the base of the ring, and therefore the fastening of the stones. Make sure that all stones are removed from the metal before compression/stretching. Then you will be able to avoid scuffs and scratches.

Which rings cannot be reduced?

Most often, such exceptions include costume jewelry and budget alloys. It is difficult to predict how such rings will behave when subjected to sudden heating. The product may turn black, oxidize, or even burst. It’s better not to take risks, because your favorite thing is at stake.

They don’t like interference:

  • platinum, titanium rings, as well as tungsten products. To work with such products, special equipment and skilled craftsman are required. Otherwise, a black mark may remain at the welding site;
  • rings made of openwork and patterned metal;
  • products with enameled or galvanic coating, as well as with a diamond edge. Please note that a visible seam may form at the welding site.

Ways to change ring size at home

If you can’t go to a jeweler, you can change the size of the ring yourself. This is a time-consuming but doable task. Of course, provided that you know how to do it. If not, then four simple but effective life hacks from the Jewelry Card network will help you with this.

How to reduce a ring at home?

Method number 1. Clear nail polish or glue.

Apply layer by layer to the inside of the product until you feel that the ring is sitting tighter. Wait until completely dry. On average, it takes 10 applications to adjust the size.

Method No. 2. Silicone lining.

The silicone coating prevents the product from slipping, which is especially helpful in frosty weather when the fingers become narrow. You can buy and attach such a lining at any jewelry store. The disadvantage of the method is its fragility. The lining must be changed at least once a month.

Method number 3. Nylon fishing line or twisted thread.

Reducing the size of the ring depends on the thickness of the thread and the density of its winding around the finger. If you tie knots on the headband, you will get an openwork winding that will reduce the ring to one size. Moreover, with this method you can adjust the size of the ring on the go. For example, if suddenly during the day your hands become swollen. To make the ring larger, move the nodes outward, and to make the ring smaller, move them inward.

Method number 4. Well, the most radical one is wire cutters.

The decoration is cut, after which the necessary part is removed, and the edges are carefully sanded with a nail file. However, when wearing it, you will have to constantly monitor the position of the ring on your finger so that the cut is not noticeable.

Ways to increase your ring size yourself

To do this, at a minimum, you will need a special tool in the form of a crossbar, a gas burner or barbell, or a hammer with a rubber surface. Be prepared for the fact that one awkward movement and the ring could be ruined. To avoid this, follow this action plan:

  1. Find a metal pin/cone with the required diameter. The cylinder should be as smooth as possible;
  2. To avoid cracks and scratches, wrap the cone in foil;
  3. Heat the product until very hot;
  4. Place a ring on the foil-lined cone. Tap it lightly with a hammer, expanding it the desired amount.

Types of jewelry techniques to increase ring size

Jewelers use three techniques to enlarge a ring. The choice of one or the other depends on the complexity of the product’s shape and the presence of additional inlay. In all other respects, the choice is yours.

Metal insert

When it comes to luxury diamond rings (those with lush patterns and delicate filigree), jewelers most often use the metal insertion method. First, the master cuts the ring from below and expands it to the required size, and then inserts an additional piece of metal of the same standard and color. Here it is important to harmoniously select additional elements to the main design of the product. If processed correctly, the product should have no seams or differences in color.

Mechanical stretch

This technique is suitable for enlarging classic rings and signets with a width of 9-12 mm. First, the jeweler calculates the amount by which the product needs to be enlarged, and then puts the ring on a special bolt. By rotating the handle of the crossbar, he increases the decoration to the desired parameters.

The simplest, but radical way. Suitable for rings with a thick rim and decorative patterns. This method can add up to 0,5 mm to the product. Boring involves sawing out the inner layer of the rim. The main disadvantage is the loss of the cut aurum.

How can a jeweler reduce the size of a ring?

Cutting out a piece of tire

Most often used for processing rings with stones decorated with colored enamel. To reduce the ring by one size, a piece 3,14 mm long is removed from the rim, and by two – 6,28 mm. Afterwards, the joint is ground and polished well.

Laser soldering is used for particularly delicate items, as well as for all white metal jewelry.

The method is used for simple rings without inlay, mostly for reducing and adjusting wedding bands. If the ring needs to be reduced by half a size, it is knocked down, and if it needs to be reduced by 1-2 sizes, it is first heated and then knocked down to the desired parameters. The soot that appears on the surface is cleaned off, and the ring is polished to a new condition.

It is considered the most expensive correction method. Another ring or plate of the same metal is inserted into the inside of the rim. The advantage of this method is that the external impact on the product is minimal, so you don’t have to worry about the fastening and safety of the stones. The decorative appearance of the product remains the same, only its internal diameter changes.

If you feel some discomfort when putting on the ring, do not rush into the purchase. After all, the beautiful appearance of the product will not cover the feeling of inconvenience from a ring that is tight or dangling on your finger. To carry out any repair work, look for a trusted jewelry workshop or use simple home life hacks. This is the only way the ring will serve you for many years!

The jewelry market and costume jewelry market offer a huge number of jewelry options, both from precious metals and various alloys: chains, bracelets, pendants, earrings, brooches and, of course, rings. But none of the above-mentioned products are as capricious as a ring! And all because when choosing a ring as a gift, it is very easy to make a mistake with the size, or your favorite ring may become out of size over time.

Fingers often change in size with age and may become thinner or fuller. If a jewelry ring is dear to your heart, then putting it in a dark box will be pitiful and painful. What can you do if the ring becomes small?

It’s easy to choose the right ring size

It is very important to initially choose the right ring size. First, decide on your hand, since the volumes of the fingers on the left and right hands may differ. At the same time, there are some rules that must be followed when choosing the treasured ring. Starting from your lifestyle, the ring should not cause discomfort while performing routine tasks. The decoration for the finger should not pinch it or the veins passing through it; do not fall off or twist, so that the product does not prick neighboring fingers with stones (if any) and does not cling to items of clothing.

It is also important that your fingers are not swollen after a heavy load or work. If your limbs are still a little swollen, raise your hand above the heart line and hold it for a while. This way, your fingers will soon return to normal and their normal shape. It is also important to spend some time in the room in which the fitting will take place. Because due to changes or contrasts in temperature, the volume of the fingers may change slightly. In general, try to relax your hands the night before your ring fitting. And following these simple tips, you can choose a ring that fits your size.

What can a jeweler do if the ring is too small?

It often happens that fingers increase in size with age. And the rings accordingly become small, squeezing the fingers, which causes inconvenience and looks completely unaesthetic. You can always exchange the ring for another, but there are jewelry that were given to us by important people, and they are filled with special meaning.

Today, professional jewelry makers offer three types of ring enlargement services:

  1. Mechanical stretch. This method is suitable for smooth rings, without inserts, up to 10 mm wide. The ring is stretched on the crossbar using special equipment. Mechanical stretching allows you to enlarge the ring by 1-2 sizes, in some cases by 3. Not suitable for products with a thick rim.
  2. Boring. With this option, the jeweler simply grinds or cuts off the inside of the ring, which allows the ring to be made half a size larger. The boring machine is suitable for thick rings, rings, and items with stones. But with this treatment, the ring loses weight. The owner of the ring has the right to take away the sawn parts of the metal.
  3. Metal insert. With this method, the ring is cut and a piece of metal of the same color is inserted in place of the cut. After this, the jeweler grinds and there are no traces of seams left.

Enlarging a gold ring at home

Fortunately, gold is a ductile and malleable noble metal. And if your jewelry ring has become too small, you can roll it out and change the size even at home. You need to find a cone-shaped shape made of solid metal or stone. Wrap the structure in foil to protect the gold ring from scratches. Place the ring on this cone and carefully, using additional tools, lower the ring along the downward flaring shape.

Why is it sometimes impossible to increase the ring size?

There are times when, due to certain circumstances or characteristics of the product, it is impossible or risky to resort to the method of increasing the size of the ring. It is not recommended to resort to expansion of the ring splint if:

  • jewelry ring – you cannot resort to increasing the size of such jewelry, because costume jewelry is made from different alloys that can behave unexpectedly; the ring may burst, crack, or darken;
  • ring with ceramic insert – it will not be possible to increase the size of such jewelry, because ceramics is a fragile, non-plastic material that cannot be stretched; with any such attempt, the ceramic insert will either burst or crack;
  • platinum ring – to enlarge a platinum ring, special rare equipment is required; not all jewelry workshops have it. And in its absence and processing using other methods, black spots may remain on the product;
  • engraved ring – you should not attempt to enlarge an engraved ring, this can lead to stretching and deformation of the inscription;
  • openwork metal ring – such a ring is also at risk of deformation, because when enlarged, the openwork metal will stretch and bend unevenly;
  • silver ring with rhodium plated – for example, when such a product is heated, the rhodium coating changes its appearance and color;
  • ring with stone – it is also not recommended to enlarge rings with stone inserts; under pressure or heating the product, the stone may fall out or deteriorate due to inappropriate temperature.

It is also worth noting that there are jewelry craftsmen who can or will be ready to undertake the work of increasing the size of the ring in any of the above cases. If you are ready to take a risk and are confident in the high professionalism of your jeweler, if the jeweler has extensive experience behind him and he guarantees the quality of his service, you can take such an adventure. But do not forget to discuss with the jewelry maker all the risks, nuances, possible losses and guarantees.

No one is immune from the unfortunate situation when the ring becomes too small while being worn. For example, if it is a wedding ring, which is usually not removed for years, or if your fingers are swollen after a hard day at work. There are several traditional methods that will help you remove a small ring without sawing it. This is of course the most extreme option. People have the following advice:

  1. Finger on finger. Try to put the thumb of your second hand under the ring, and place your index finger on the ring. While pressing, try to scroll the product towards the nail.
  2. Cold or salt water. You can dip your hand in cold water or saline solution. This will relieve swelling and your fingers will return to their previous size.
  3. Hands up. For swelling in hot weather, the method of raising your arms above the so-called heart line helps a lot. In this position, blood flow to the limb will decrease and the swelling will go away in a couple of minutes.
  4. Fat or oil. There is also an option to dip your finger in something greasy and slippery: vegetable oil, Vaseline or greasy cream. Sliding will make the task much easier.
  5. Thread to help. You need to thread the tail of the thread under the ring. Wrap the rest of the thread in 10-15 tight turns around the phalanx below the ring. After that, take the ponytail and pull it towards the nail. Thereby tightening the ring along the turns of the thread. Some kind of smooth thread is best: silk or dental.

All of the above methods have been tested by more than one person. This means that one of them will definitely help you remove and save a gold ring that has become small.
