Why a coil?
A heated towel rail is often called a coil, out of habit. However, it has long been produced in different forms: M-shaped, S-shaped, in the form of a ladder, the letter E. This especially applies to electric models, since their performance does not depend on the supply and circulation of water.
In order for an electrical appliance to be placed in the bathroom, it must be manufactured taking into account electrical safety requirements. Make sure that its electrical protection class is not lower than II (it means reinforced insulation). In addition, such a dryer cannot be placed in places where jets of water can come into contact with it (the distance to the bathtub or shower is at least 60 cm). Otherwise, if the device is properly designed and protected, its use in wet areas is permitted.

In a moonshine still, all its parts are important, but the coil is directly responsible for the efficiency of distillation. I won’t bog you down – ideally it should be made of glass – this is an absolutely chemically neutral material that instantly responds to temperature changes, which means it ensures effective heat exchange, which is very important for the condensation process. But this type of coil has more disadvantages than advantages. First of all, they are fragile. In addition, you will not be able to use them in “camping conditions” – only in moonshine stills of flow-through cooling. People call a coil a refrigerator.
What to make a coil for a moonshine still from?
As always, first I want to share my personal experience. I distill moonshine at the dacha, where I actually live 12 months a year – yes, it’s very good here in winter too! That’s why I made the moonshine still “for the dacha” – that is, I have a non-flowing “refrigerator”. This is a 20-liter container, a plastic canister with the top part cut off. A hole is made in the lower part of one of the walls through which the outlet end of the coil, twisted into 6-8 rings inside the container, is brought out. The length of the coil in my moonshine still with a 40-liter still is about 3-3,5 meters.
The upper part of the tube is free – I simply put a silicone hose of the appropriate diameter on it. I put the container near the stove, fill it with water, and on the stove – a flask with mash for distillation – that’s all the math. By the way, during the entire distillation time, which is about 4-6 hours (20-25 liters of mash), I do not change the water in the “refrigerator”, but only occasionally stir it. In the summer, if it gets too hot, I just add ice.
So, the coil for my moonshine still is made of copper. Its advantages:
- Relatively chemically neutral
- High thermal conductivity
- Corrosion resistance
- Softness of metal
Try bending food grade stainless steel tubing. Happened? Hardly. And copper is malleable. You can make a coil out of it at home. You will have to buy a stainless steel coil for a moonshine still. But stainless steel has a serious advantage – higher levels of chemical neutrality. The fact is that copper gradually oxidizes as a result of contact with water and air, and a greenish coating forms inside – patina. Under natural conditions, this process takes 50-150 years, and in a coil – 1-3 years. Patina reduces thermal conductivity and the permeability of the tube, as a result of which the quality of the moonshine decreases, and the “refrigerator” itself gradually becomes clogged. But I myself have been using copper for 4 years in a row, which is already time to replace.
Why doesn’t a stainless steel tube for a moonshine still last longer?
It’s also not worth assuming that a stainless steel tube for a moonshine still of this type will last longer. The fact is that in any case, plaque will be deposited on its inner surface, cross-country ability will decrease, and hauling efficiency will drop. In this case, blowing the tube with water will be a completely useless exercise – this will only worsen the situation. Just remember – not a single “refrigerator” will last you longer than 5-6 years (depending on the intensity of use), with the exception of glass and a distillation column.
What is a distillation column or “tsarga”?
Many modern factory-made moonshine stills are supplied complete with a drawer. Its size does not exceed 40-50 cm, the mounting on the distillation cube is vertical. Essentially, this is a distillation column. The internal cavity is a labyrinth of crescent-shaped plates, the intermediate cavity is where water runs through it, and then the outer lining. Quite an effective thing, but only for devices with flow-type cooling. Deposits practically do not attach to them, so this “coil” will last longer.
Am I a supporter of distillation columns? Definitely no! Why? The coil of the moonshine still, which you can buy separately or make yourself, is the “heart” of the process. This is where ethyl alcohol condenses, evaporating from the live mash. Almost any process must have its own speed and intensity. Attempts to speed it up will not be successful even without additional scientific explanations, because this is a craft! Have you tried vodka that would be tastier than high-quality homemade moonshine or tincture? Hardly.
Rectification at the root deprives moonshine of aroma and makes it harsh. You will end up with a “naked” spirit after two distillations, and will be forced to infuse it with something to give it flavor. There is no point in making fruit mash for rectification. Sugar – no matter what. Yes, in terms of cleaning – the distillation column is effective, but we don’t need pure alcohol, but moonshine!
