Advantages of zeolite compared to perlite:
- Zeolite has a negative electrical charge, while pearlite has a positive electrical charge. Therefore, perlite, unlike zeolite, does not combine with applied fertilizers;
- Zeolite is able to absorb water from the air;
- Zeolite is heavier than perlite, so it does not spread due to drafts and does not float when watering. Perlite is light and highly dusty, and when working with the mineral you need a protective mask and goggles;
- Zeolite is not abrasive, while the abrasiveness of perlite can cause damage to the roots when replanting plants;
- Over time, perlite turns red and becomes covered with a layer of salts;
- Zeolite consumption is significantly less. In soil mixtures, perlite must be added at least twice as much as zeolite;
- Zeolite retains its properties for at least 5 years and perfectly aerates the soil, while perlite becomes crushed over the years and creates a lot of dust.
Vermiculite obtained from waste ore, which undergoes heat treatment in furnaces. When fired, vermiculite swells and breaks up into separate plate-like fractions resembling mica. The resulting material is called agrovermiculite.
Advantages of zeolite compared to vermiculite:
- Over time, microscopic algae begin to multiply in the porous vermiculite crystals – it turns green;
- Due to its structure and properties, it is not advisable to use agrovermiculite for succulent plants. Its excessive ability to accumulate moisture and at the same time the uneven release of this moisture can cause rotting of the roots;
- Zeolite is heavier than expanded vermiculite, so it does not spread due to drafts and does not float when watering. Vermiculite is light and highly dusty, and a protective mask and goggles are required when working with the material;
- Vermiculite has many micro- and macroelements, but unlike zeolite, in a form inaccessible to plants;
- Vermiculite is heterogeneous and is compressed together with the soil during watering;
- Vermiculite can be contaminated with asbestos, since the geological formation processes of both minerals are similar.
